“You liar!” How many times has Adrianne heard that? Too much. So much, in fact, Adrianne almost believed it herself. But the keyword is almost, and for that she was grateful. “You have to be lying! You were holding my purse, therefore you MUST have stolen it, you thief!” Her accuser shouted again, angrily gripping her newly-found purse. Being so used to such accusement, instead of a stabbing pain to her heart like it once was, the words only brought a deep numbness. Perhaps the numbness rubbed off on Adrianne physically, for she had abnormally pale skin and dark, black curly hair. Most people joked about her being a vampire, a vampire who likes to lie.
“I told you before, and I’m telling you again. I. Did. NOT. Steal. Your. Purse. I merely found it laying against a tree, and decided it would be best should I pick it up and hand it over to you. Which I did, but you don’t seem very grateful. Would you rather leave it for someone else to take it?” Adrianne was just getting out of school, more than ready to leave and go home, but stopped when she saw a purse that seemed very familiar to her. Realizing it was one of her classmate’s, she picked it up and walked around, trying to find her and give it back.
Happily, she’d found the owner, a short girl with fiery-red hair and honey-brown eyes, pacing back and forth, seemingly looking for something, in the middle of the school’s big yard that greeted everyone the moment they set sights on the building. The yard itself was beautiful, with rich-green grass and daisies all about, having almost everyone become happy at the mere sight of it all. Adrianne thought it would be kind and she’d would receive a thank you and a smile in return. However, instead she got a glare and accusations. Too much drama for such a simple thing.
“As if I’m going to believe THAT pathetic little tale of yours! What, did you just MAKE IT UP on the spot or something?! Nice try, but not good enough!” This girl, Diana, Adrianne believed was her name, was loud, rude, and stubborn. So very stubborn she refused to listen to her side of the story. Which wasn’t really a story at all. ‘If I stole it, why would I be handing it back to her willingly?’ Adrianne thought, getting more impatient by each passing second.

Apparently Adrianne was right about Diana being loud, as one of the other students, who too wished to leave and go home, walked up towards the two of them with a concerned expression on her face. “Why are you yelling so loudly, Diana? Don’t you want to go home after such a long day? I know I do.” Claire, if Adrianne remembered correctly, asked softly, her long, light-blonde hair cascading down her back with worried light-blue eyes scanning the two of them. Completely the opposite of Diana, and for that Adrianne was happy.
“I can’t, I WON’T, until this, this, this LIAR gets what she deserves!” Diana shouted, a determined look in her honey-brown eyes, her fiery-red hair going into her face. Adrianne wanted to scream, and honestly thought she would, with this overdramatic girl.
“What did she lie about, Diana? Are you sure she’s even lying? You do know how badly you perceive things, don’t you?” Claire spoke, eyes fixed solely on Diana.
“She stole my purse, but she’s saying she found it laying against a tree and chose to give it back to me. But I KNOW she’s lying. I just know it!” Diana answered, looking furious.

“Diana, Adrianne’s not lying.” Claire said, looking disappointed.
Calming down by a smudge, Diana replied, “What do you mean by that?”
“What I mean is that she’s telling the truth. If I remember right, you were sleeping against a tree during lunch break with your purse. When the bell rang, you shot up and ran to class, not wanting to be late. In your hurry to must’ve left your purse laying against the tree. Diana, you apologize this instant,” Claire spoke, just like a mother.

Everything went silent as Diana thought over what Claire just said. After a few moments, a soft “sorry” came from Diana’s lips. She was looking at the ground shamefully, Adrianne noticed. After a moment of silence since Diana said that one word, both her and Claire looked at Adrianne, honey-brown and light-blue eyes gazing at her. Finally, after what seemed like forever, a reply came from Adrianne.
“Liar.”
And that, which most could agree upon, was the truth. A truth told by a “liar.”

The author's comments:

At first, this wasn't even what I was intending to write. Far from it, really. After writing something else, which I didn't quite like, I deleted the whole thing and started over. This is the first thing that came to mind, and I'm glad how it came out. Most of the writing I do is unitentional, and I kinda like it like that. I'm proud of this short story, more than I thought I would.
