American Dream
American Dream Interview
Mr.Krier's maternal family immigrated to the United States during a potato famine in Scotland, “They were forced to leave Ireland because of the potato famine when the British didn’t care if the Irish Catholics or Irish Protestants died.” Mr. Krier's paternal family came from Germany; his grandfather came from Germany for a reason unknown, “he was a trained baker in the large kingdom of Wartenberg". When his Irish forefathers came to America, “they were discriminated as Mexicans and Hondurans and Salvadorans and people of all Latin America are today." Said Mr.Krier.
Growing up, he didn't have an American dream “i grew up in an atmosphere where there wasn't ever any need or want", he said. He was the first of all his family, including extended family to attend college "i was the first of 23 or 22 cousins to go to college”. Mr.Krier studied politics and French in college. He had no aspirations to be anything because the only careers he had ever heard of were becoming a doctor or a lawyer and he didn't desire to be either, “My father always declared you are attending college to be a lawyer or a doctor and I never heard different”.
At 22 Mr.Krier emigrated to Germany and lived there for 6 years” I moved to Germany in 1972 right after college, i went to work in a factory where I learned German extremely quickly from all the other workers constant yelling”. While he lived in Germany, he looked for the place from which his forefathers came from. I believe
He moved back to complete a PhD and decided to stay since after 40 people can't do anything in Germany. Another reason for which he decided to stay was that when he came back to the United States he came to California. Mr.Krier had lived his entire life in the outskirts of Philadelphia “I lived in a place where two of my neighbors had farms “while he lived in this country, however when he came back to the U.S., this time to California he grasped another way of realizing an American dream. Teaching is a way he realizes his own American dream.
