A Concert You Will Never Forget

Have you ever had a night where you can’t fall asleep because you cannot wait for the next day to come? Have you ever woken up that morning, shaking from excitement, with a knot in your stomach from nerves? I have. That day was June 29, 2013. It’s 9AM on a summer morning and I’m already awake and trembling for something that wont be happening for another ten hours. I try to stay calm and have a normal morning without a mental breakdown. I eat my breakfast, take a shower, and relax while watching TV for a few hours. Suddenly, its 1PM, and I run to my room and begin getting ready by straightening my hair, doing my makeup, and making sure my outfit looks perfect. I try to look the best I could, for 5 people on a stage who I know will not see me in a crowd of over 21,000 people. It’s now 4PM. My friends Nicole, Melissa, and Kristen arrive to my house. We’re not even at the arena yet, and my house is full of four teenage girls screeching. Finally, we load into the car and begin our hour and a half ride to Jones Beach Theater in New York. While in the car, we’re blasting music, and singing along to the songs we’re about to hear live. And that’s when my heart starts pumping faster; I’m about to see One Direction live. Yes, this won’t be my first time seeing my favorite band live, it will be my sixth, to be exact. But, this is going to be the best show, and I know that for a fact. These songs are all new that I’ve never heard live before, and Jones Beach Theater is beautiful. It was a perfect summer night to be outside along the water, with a perfect breeze to keep us from sweating but no Goosebumps either, at least not from weather. As we start getting closer and closer to the venue my friends and I freak out even more by each minute passing. I’m seeing my favorite band in an hour.

We arrive to Jones Beach. The amount of people running around in their One Direction t-shirts and their funny signs, just adds to my excitement. Melissa, Kristen, Nicole and I take as many pictures as possible to remember this amazing night to be. We look at the time, 6:45, and it’s fifteen minutes till the show begins. The four of us go to find our seats, and prepare for the breakdowns we’re about to have. The crowd is going crazy already and opening act hasn’t even emerged. I get a text from twitter notifying me that Niall tweeted; he said how he couldn’t wait for the show to begin and that got the crowd to go wild. The opening act took the stage pumping up the whole crowd. About 45 minutes later they went backstage again. By this time the sun was beginning to set, and being on the water made it a beautiful experience. Until the sun was gone we sat in anticipation waiting for One Direction.

8:30 pm. The band walks onto the stage beginning to play the guitars, drum, and keyboard, and as they start playing the tune to “Up All Night”, Liam, Zayn, Niall, Louis, and Harry appeared on stage. Unless you’ve been to a One Direction concert before, I can honestly say you will never be able to even imagine the noise the fans make when they begin to sing. Song after song everyone is still on their feet screaming, dancing, and singing along to every song. As they go off and back on the stage during outfit changes they have a pre-recorded video playing on the big screens, so the crowd never gets a break from them. It takes them about 2 minutes to come back on stage and going at it again. Mid-concert, they have a “twitter section” where they show 5 lucky fan’s tweets of requests for them to do something on stage, or answer a question, and they do it. I’ve seen them do impersonations of one another, silly dances like “the worm”, singing the theme song to “Fresh Prince”, and many more crazy things. I think that’s one thing that keeps One Direction performances different from others: they’re always so in touch with the fans. If someone was to throw something on stage they’ll throw it back, some people even throw their phones and one of them would pick it up and start recording a video of them on stage and then return the phone back to the owner.

Without any fail, One Direction makes every concert I’ve been to one of the best nights of my life. As they finish their last verse of “What Makes You Beautiful” it’s sad to accept that the concert is finished. Nicole, Kristen, Melissa, and I, alone with 2,000 plus people try to make our way to the exit. For the next two weeks prior to the concert, it was the only thing I ever talked about, making it a concert I will never forget.
