Deer Me

In early 2013, a team of military scientists conducted a miniscule and classified experiment in relations to the study of deer and their behavioral habits when isolated within a group. Prof. D. Stevens, Ph.D, constructed this idea after a personal scare following a car accident with a deer. He claimed that during this encounter the deer communicated with him, but hesitated to explain further due to the fear of being labeled insane. Nonetheless, he was determined to prove his point.

The team, consisting of two other scientists, picked out an open field of about 100 acres in rural Alaska and in the middle of it built a fully functioning town, compact with water, electricity, roads, a warehouse full of food for the deer, housing, and much more. They then fenced in the town and gathered a herd of deer from the wild. The herd of about 100 deer or so was split up and transported via helicopters to this town, where they were transported to and released within safely.

Predictions of the outcome were mixed. Stevens himself oddly thought that the deer would adapt and make use of the running water, and equally distribute the food supply somehow. His other two partners thought they would either kill each other being too dumb to find the food or the water, or rather just starve to death together also due to being too dumb to find the food or water. At first, the deer hesitated; obviously they were still frightened due to the fact they were literally kidnapped from their natural habitat and caged into a gigantic loud flying object. As they began to slowly but surely ponder their new home, they unknowingly were about to change history as their supervision changed the world as a whole.

The deer made use of every single resource available to them, and they seemed to verbally communicate with each other in a manner that was perfectly clear to them. Above all, they seemed to be positive and genuinely happy of their new home. As the scientists continued to monitor them for a while, they knew that they would have to release the deer eventually as their food supply was growing small, or bring them more food; however, to their surprise, the deer appeared to have began growing their own fruits and vegetables. More scientists joined in on the experiment to help as it gained popularity and they proved to be smarter than previously thought.

The astoundment of the deer and their adaptations only continued to grow. On an early morning a few months into the experiment, a large military grade helicopter much like the ones that the deer were dropped off in unexpectedly showed up to the deer town. Stevens thought one of his partners had called something in, but he noticed it was an older helicopter with the Russian flag on both sides. A group of deer greeted and escorted the man off of the helicopter and into one of the buildings that the deer seemed to hang around the most. The human seemed to perfectly communicate with the deer, understanding everything they were ‘saying,’ however there was no way of knowing exactly what they were saying or how they were even communicating, nonetheless what language - no audio equipment was installed, however there were phone lines that sometimes were called but the deer would usually hang up quickly. There was no way to know if it was intentional or not. It was however inferred somehow that the deer could speak Russian.

A group of deer exited the house with the man from the helicopter, who later was discovered to be Vladimir Putin. The group got onto the helicopter and immediately Stevens directed that we stop it due to this experiments classifications and how out of control it was getting. Rather than that however, it was decided we continue to monitor this on the down low and a small drone was sent to follow and watch the helicopter. The helicopter made its way to the country of Jordan, a country in the middle east, literally in the middle of a bunch of countries that hate each other, notorious for selling them all weapons that they then go back to their homelands and use against each other. Russia supplied the deer with an almost unlimited supply of military weaponry and vehicles and brought them back to their town, but not before stopping in Russia and picking up a couple hundred Musk deer from Siberia.

The American deer trained the Musk deer in a military like fashion, and the deer had seemed to form a solid government by now. It was evident there was multiple forms and examples of social classes within the town. Russian forces seemed to often come back and forth, and one day things took a turn. Russia and the deer fired a missile at North Korea. Now directly before this, it was evident that something was up and it might be a good idea to interfere with the experiment, but the U.S military couldn’t risk Russia knowing they knew what they knew. They decided not to intervene. World War III had began.

It was a crazy idea we had one day and I made it into a short story.
