There are moments in life that suck up everything around them, until one day you look back and all there is, is that moment. Sometimes it is a happy moment, such as meeting your future spouse. After all, when you’re old and married and looking back on the first date, it’s hard to remember the day before or after it. Or the birth of a child. Ask your parents about your birth. They will be able to tell you a lot about it. But try asking them what they did the day before. They won’t know. Other times, it’s bad moments. Few people can tell you what happened in the weeks before a loved one died. These moments suck at the time around them, drawing it in. They’re black holes. So how can you tell these moments when you are passing through them? It’s only in hindsight that the star collapses into a black hole. The answer is, listen. Black holes are said to generate a sound in the key of B-flat. These moments also make a sound. Listen for the sound of tears hitting a table while oblivious people chatter happily in the background. Or maybe it’s rain, not tears. Listen for the sound of a shy question, plied in an unfamiliar and comforting way. Listen for dark tones and trite words of praise. Listen for cooing and screams. Listen for applause and cheering and sobs. Listen.
