The Comeback Kids
There once was a baseball team named the Chicago Fierce. The Chicago Fierce was the worst baseball team in the whole state of Illinois. The Fierce had a regular season record of 1-17. They would get beat badly 10-0 and 9-0. There was a state tournament every year that the Fierce always plays in. Last season they didn’t make it past the first round of the tournament. The players and coaches were tired of getting beat every game and wanted to win a championship.
“This year we are going to win a championship.” Said Coach Adams
“Yes coach.” Said all the players
“This is our year to show everybody who we are.” Said Coach Adams
The team knew that they were going to have to practice hard every day, and keep their heads up to strive for the championship trophy. The coaches were not yanking their chain on practicing hard. The tournament started July 4, so the team had a good 2 months to prepare. The Fierce only had 1 good player, and he was their best pitcher also the best hitter on the team. His name was Greg Smith. He was as fast as a cheetah. His batting average was .397. He had thrown 50 strike outs in 10 games started.
It was the first day of training and practice. May 10th, and all the players were ready to give it everything and practice to be ready to win a championship. The Fierce were going to practice every day Monday through Friday 2PM to 4:30PM. The team lifted weights every day and did everything they could to get into shape to prepare for the tournament. Before starting all the training, all the players worried about losing the first round again 2 years in a row.
It was halfway through the month of June, and the team scheduled a scrimmage game against another team from Illinois. The players were excited to play and ready to get a win to build confidence. The game was set for 5PM that Saturday. All the players got to the game at 4PM to go over things they had worked on to do well in the game.
The first inning was about to start and the Fierce were glad to play a game. The Fierce were first to bat and the pitcher threw the ball and… SMACK it was a homerun straight as an arrow out of the park. The crowd was amazed and shocked. Nobody knew that that was going to happen. Not even the coaches expected that to happen. By the end of the inning the score was 3-1 Fierce. The end of the game came and the final score was 7-2 Fierce. The next day was practice and coaches didn’t push them as in result of a great win yesterday. After practice players celebrated with pizza, cake, and ice-cream.
It was two days before the tournament started, and everybody was well prepared and ready to battle for the 1st place trophy. The tournament was in Pennsylvania, so the team took a plane to get to the stadium the day before first games started. The day finally came to an end. It was a bright sunny morning in Philadelphia. The Fierce were the 1st to play in the tournament at 2PM. the Fierce were ranked 13 of 16, and they were playing a 5th ranked team. The Fierce were a team that everybody thought they would destroy in the games.
The game started and was scoreless until the 5th inning. The Fierce Scored 4 runs in the 6th inning and won the game. The second game ended in a 6-2 win against a team from Indiana. In addition, the pitcher played the entire game with 7 strike outs. It was the third game. The Fierce had to win to get into the championship game, and that’s exactly what they did. They hit 3 homeruns and scored 7 runs. The Fierce were going to the championship.
The game everybody had been waiting for had finally come. The game was at the Philadelphia Phillies stadium. The players smelled the fresh cut grass on the field. It was going to be an experience that nobody would forget. The game started at approximately 4:05. The 1st inning was exciting with 4 runs scored by each teams. All the other innings were scoreless. It was the bottom of the 6th inning, the score tied 4-4, and the Fierce were up to bat. The first batter hit a double, and the next 2 batters struck out. With 2 outs and bottom of the 6th, Greg Smith came up to bat. The pitcher threw 2 balls and 1 strike, and then the unexpected happened. SWING. The players thought that a trophy was a friend the players wanted to have. It was a homerun and the Fierce won the game. Then all the players on the team stormed the field and celebrated with Greg Smith
It was a sweet smell of victory. The team got a big trophy to bring back home to Chicago and share with friends and family.
