Elena and Jake


When Elena meet Jake, she instantly fell in love. Elena had just been through a tough relationship with another boy, whom had been cheating on her with her best friend. She has grieved for days afterwards, but when she beheld Jake, all was forgotten. She felt lost in his eyes and wondered if he loved her. She always tried to ask, but whenever she got close, something always got in her way.

Then Monday, at school, she finally had her chance once again. There was no one around to stop her. She edged closer and closer until he was just around the corner. She approached him and tapped his shoulder. He turned to see her and asked, “ Well, how are you?” She was surprised that he spoke to her. She always thought that he did not even know she existed. She tried to answer, but only was able to say, “ Uh, uh, um,..” He saw that she was nervous. She ran away thinking she had failed, that he would think she was a shy little girl. Actually, he was as in love with her as she was with him.

After school, Jake followed her home. When she arrived, he tapped her shoulder. Elena jumped and screamed. She thought that someone was about to rob her. She turned and saw it was Jake. “ What are you doing here?” She asked. “ I followed you home. I wanted to ask you out to dinner. I have a reservation at that new restaurant downtown.”
Elena was so happy, she cried. “ Why are you crying?” Jake asked. “These are tears of joy. I would be glad to go with you.” Jake and Elena went out to dinner that night and became a couple.

That was three years ago. Now, Elena and Jake have graduated college and are married. They have lived happily all these years, with Jake’s father being the owner of a giant company. He funded everything they ever needed and he was always nice. Then on Tuesday March 7th at 7:43 p.m. he suddenly died. It looked like suicide, but nobody could be sure. There were no witnesses and no leads. The cops had to shut down the case after a week of investigation. Jake was heart-broken. After that, he was never the same. His habits changed, he was always depressed, he did not eat much, but the thing that was the strangest was, he was always looking behind his back, like he was afraid that he was being followed. It worried Elena, but she acted ignorant if Jake asked about it.

Then on Thursday May 15th, Jake left for a business trip. Since his father had died, Jake became the president of the company. He had to go to England for a contract with another company. He was really excited, saying it would be great for the company and the two of them. After he left, the house felt empty. She decided to go stay with her mother. Elena had not seen her in a while and thought it would be nice to visit.

She stayed at the house for a week and then decided to return home. Her mother seemed to be losing her grip on life and she did not want to stress her out. When she returned home, she found a note on her bed. It said that she was to go to the old factory downtown. If she did not, she would be killed. It also stated that if she told anything to the police, they would kill her husband.

Elena freaked out. She did not know what to do. She knew that it was dangerous to go to the factory, but she did not see any other way. She was scared for her and her husband’s life. She thought about it and decided that the only thing she could do was go to the factory. She jumped in her car and drove downtown. She pondered calling Jake before realizing he would probably be doing something important.

She arrived at the factory. As she got out of the car, she saw someone run down the alley towards the main office buildings. She locked the car and ran after him. She chased him into the offices and then lost him. She started to leave when she blacked out.

She came to in an old office. The room was dimly lit by only a candle. From what she could see, it appeared to be midnight. Then, she saw a figure rush past her in the darkness. Elena was scared for her life, but she tried her best to remain calm. She did not want to take the risk of setting them off. She remained calm and tried to see what was there. She saw the outline of two people, watching her. Then she heard a voice over the intercom. It said, “ Do not worry, as long as you cooperate with us, you will walk out of here just fine. Now, answer our questions. If you wish to live that is. Where is Jake?”

Elena was worried. These people could hurt her and her husband. She did not want to see anyone hurt though, but she decided to find out why these people wanted to know where her husband was. She asked them, “ Why do you want to know?” They replied, “ What is it with you hostages, always wanting to know why?” The door opened. One of the men walked into the room with a lamp. The room was fully lit now and she was able to see all of her surroundings. The room was small and had one window. There was a desk with an old computer on top. The man approached her. He said, “ Now, answer the question.”

He was holding a knife in his hand. It was bloody, as though it had been used before many times. She knew that she had to answer the question. “ I will tell you where he is if you tell me why you want to know.” The man laughed. It was as if he had heard that sentence before. It made her wonder how many people these men had done this to before. “ He went on a business trip. Now, tell me why you want to know.” Elena said. Again, the man laughed. “ I do not believe you are in a position to be giving commands, girl.” The man stepped closer and started to bring the knife towards her throat. She was terrified. “ Now, where did they go?” He sounded like he was gathering his anger.

There was no other way. She had to tell them, but what would they do to Jake. “ He is in Europe. Will you please tell me what this is all about.” Elena was worried what they would do to her. The man replied. “ Well, at least we are getting somewhere with all this. Can you give us a more specific location. I would hate for there to be an accident.” He lifted his knife to her neck. She was in extreme danger and wondered why she chose to go here. She decided to be brave against the odds. Then, the man spoke. “ You really do not know, do you? Your husband is not who you think he is.” Elena was shocked. These people were trying to tell her that her husband, whom she had known for three years, was not who she thought he was! Who did they think they are?! “ What do you mean, not who I think he is?!” The man laughed. She noticed the other man was gone. How long had he been gone? “ You remember how his father died, yes? Well it was not suicide. It was murder, and I know who killed him.”

This was the biggest news she had heard all day. She could not believe it. She refused to believe it, but she wanted to know what he did, so she kept quiet. “ Jake killed his father. He wanted control of the company. Your husband is a murderer, and this is why we must find him, so that revenge can be done. The world will not miss him.

These men wanted to kill her husband and there was nothing she could do. She had to keep quiet, but if she does, she will die. What could she do? Again, she had no choice. She had to tell them. She began to tell them, when the other man burst back in. “I know where he is!” He had found Jake, or rather the letter he sent her. Now, they could kill him and she would have to live without him, knowing that this is her fault. “ Well, thank you for your time, Elena. Guys, take her back to her car and make sure she leaves. Oh, and if you say a word to the police, we will kill you. Goodbye, Elena and let us hope that we never meet again.’

The men returned her to her car and she drove back home. Jake was as good as dead. There was nothing she could do. Later that week, the news came out that a man had been died while in the top office of the company. From what the police could gather, he had jumped out the window. There were no witnesses and nothing to prove otherwise. Only Elena knew the truth, and she could not tell anyone. She had to live with this forever. She did not know how she would go on.
