Deadfall
Hoping to prevent being any later to class Kayla, Matty and Ben stepped into the school’s elevator.
“Dude, I told you we shoulddn’t have gone through the woods,” Ben complained at the fact that Matty had dragged them through the woods, hoping to find a ‘spirit’. The only spirit in this place was the liquor that they had managed to steal from the town nearby.
“It’s fine, Mr Kuno won’t even notice that we’re even missing. Just chill out Ben,” Matty replied as he pulled Kayla towards him and planted him tongue down her throat, pushing her against the elevator wall.
“Babe, Ben’s here,” Kayla pushed Matty off him, and straightened her shirt.
Just then the elevator came to an abrupt stop, slamming Kayla against the elevator wall and onto Matty.
“What the-” Matty began, but was cut off by the incessant beeping of the school’s fire alarm. “It’s alright. It’s probably just a drill or something...” his voice trailed off as he realised that someone would have told him if it was just a drill.
“Shush, listen,” Kayla stood up, and walked the short distance towards the elevator doors. She pressed her ear against the door.
The sound of over a five hundred teenagers screaming and moving outside could be heard. She started pounding her fists against the door, screaming for someone to come and save them. Ben moved to the door, imitating Kayla’s actions. They continued for two minutes, before realising it was hopeless and that everyone had already gone outside and out to safety.
“What are we going to do, Matty?” Kayla sank down to the metal floor, pulling her legs up to her chest, and started to cry.
Matty squatted down in front of kayla, taking her hands in his. “Babe, everything’s going to be fine. I’m sure it’s just routine or something. Just wait and someone will come find us. Right, Ben? Ben?”
“Sorry. Yeah someone will. Dude, can you smell that?”
Kayla sniffled, and raised her head to look at Ben. “Smell what?”
“It’s like something’s burning... holy christ! I think this place is on fire!” Ben started trying to pry the door open with his fingers. “Matty come help!”
With Matty’s help, they managed to pry the door open a small amount, and came faced with a brick wall. The burning smell was getting closer and stronger, and as Ben looked up, he saw small flames beginning to lick the cables holding the elevator up.
“Guys, we have slight problem... I think the fire came from the science labs, and we need to get out right now!” Ben turned to face Kayla and Matty.
Kayla stood up, to look at Ben, “What do you mean?”
“The fire’s spreading quickly, and it’s burning it’s way through the cables overhead.”
The elevator lunged a few feet down, on the left side, as one of the cables broke. They were thrown against the left wall, which seared them with the increasing heat of the metal.
“Oh... my... God! We’re going to die in here!” Kayla started babbling, as tears welled in her eyes, and she began bawling.
“Kayla, I’m not going to let you die! No one is going to die! Do you hear me! none of us!” Matty pulled Kayla towards him, as he moved her towards the right side of the elevator.
They could hear the fire on the roof of the elevator, as the flames tried to make their way into the room. Smoke was seeping in, gagging them all, constricting their lungs and throat. With a snap, the cable on the right side of the lift snapped, plummeting them down with increasing speed.
It landed with a loud thud, as it reached the floor of the school’s basement. Kayla screamed out in pain, as her leg was contorted at an unnatural angle, with her bone jutting out through her jeans. Matty and Ben appeared for the most part to be unscathed, and both moved over to examine Kayla.
“Oh, babe..” Matty held Kayla’s hand, as she yelled out in agony.
The flames were continuing to melt the metal, and drops off it were dripping down over them.
“Crap!” Ben pulled his jacket over his head, as the drops seared his skin.
The ceiling was melting with speed, with the metal coming down almost like a river. They were all on the ground coughing, but Matty held Kayla’s hand firmly in his. The flames were beginning to lick down the walls, towards them, creeping closer as if enjoying their torment.
The flames began to engulf them. Large red blisters bubbled across their faces and body, as the flames charred their skin. Kayla opened her mouth to say something to Matty, but only a whisper came out, which was only heard by their death chamber.
No one ever found the lost bodies of the three teenagers until many years later, and it’s said that their tormented souls still roam through the school, screaming in excruciating agony and preying on anyone who tries to come to class late.
