It Came From the Book

He had warned me about the book. Now, it was too late. He had told me not to take the book home, for dark mysterious things happen for those who do. I realize now my mistake. I should have listened to him, because now it was too late. After I got home, book in hand, I was eager to open it and begin reading. I hurried up the stairs to my room, quickly shutting the door closed behind me. I turned on my lamp, laid down in my bed and I finally opened the book.

The moment I opened the book, strange green vines started sprouting from the pages. The vines kept growing, and growing, and growing. Before long my whole room was covered in vines and various plant life, but it didn’t stop there. Oh no, it spread from my room to the hallway, down the stairs covering every inch of my house. My house wasn’t even a house anymore, it was a jungle. A jungle that no matter how far you looked, it never seemed to end. I didn’t know what to do.

After an hour of just sitting in wonder I finally got myself together. I decided that it would be best if I found that awful book. I was expecting to have to search for hours on end, after all nothing seemed the same. All I had to do was look behind me. Somehow the book was free of vines, just the way I left it. I read the pages that I flipped to. The pages told of a massive jungle, a jungle that never seemed to end. Just like the jungle that I now stood in. I thought about turning the page, but I was scared of what that would do. Would it change into a different landscape? Perhaps it would take me to the middle of the ocean? I guess there was only one way to find out. I decided to flip to the very first page, perhaps this book had a story line, or maybe even a hint to help me get out of this godforsaken jungle. Taking a deep breath I turn the page.

Instead of vines, this time it was sand. Grain upon grain it fell from the book. No, it shot out of the book. The heat begin to change. It grew very hot, very fast. Immediately I started to sweat. Not wanting to waste anytime in this hot, barren landscape, I read the page. This page was just like the last, telling of a landscape. What was this book about? All it seemed to have was in-depth descriptions of landscapes. Frowning I study the page looking at every letter trying to get a clue on how I could get back to my house. Sighing, I turn the page.

Nothing came poring out of the book, as I expected. Frowning I read the page. As I was about halfway done with the page I was reading, a little bug scuttles out of the book. Then, little bugs came shooting out of the book. Some flew, some crawled, some rolled, some jumped. Startled, I drop the book. After the swarm of bugs, different desert creatures crawled out. Lizards, snakes, meerkats, all the desert animals that you could think of popped out of the book. Page after page was the same, except different things popped out of the book, same landscape. Before to long, a human popped out of the book. The next page the humans began to build things. The page after that, they already had a full civilization. Twenty pages later the humans died out, due to disease. Ten pages later it started to get cold, very cold. Ten pages after that, the whole desert was a frozen tundra. Then it hit me. The book was kind of like a history book. Right now, I was in the ice age.

Amazed I turned page after page. Glaciers move around me, bringing soil to the once barren desert. After all the glaciers melted and moved away, plant life begin to sprout up. Before long, I was back in the jungle. I kept turning the pages, reading each one. I was fascinated by how the landscape constantly changed. Soon humans popped out of my book, and begin to tame the vast jungle. The jungle was now a thriving civilization. The people went through many hardships, hardships like war, famine and disease.

Eventually men with guns popped out of the book. They were the English. It started out peacefully. Then they started to fight over land. The English won. I turned page after page. The little Indian tribe was now a thriving English colony. The thriving English colony soon became a thriving little town. The thriving little town, turned into a thriving little city.

Before to long a little car popped out of my book. We were getting into modern times. I was almost back home! Technology advanced, things I started to recognized popped up. The little grocery store next to my house popped up. It turns out it used to be a pharmacy. My house was being built, I was exited I must be in the late ‘1800s or early ‘1900s! I only had about ten pages left of the book. I read each one eagerly. I now recognized everything around me. I recognized all the people that came out of the book. One more page left, and I would be home. I turn the last page, bursting with excitement. What I found on that last page was disheartening, or what I didn’t find on the page. It was blank. There was nothing.

Confused I looked around. Maybe I was back? Maybe everything was back to normal? I walked into my house, and I looked around. My family was around the kitchen table, having supper. My mom, my dad, my brother and sister. I tried to talk to them, but they wouldn’t respond to me. It was like I was invisible, maybe even dead. I was somewhere on the line of hysteria, sadness, and anger. I run up to my room, hoping that my bed, my stuff, just anything to prove that I was real or, That I ever existed. What I find there was strange. I found myself, laying in my bed with the book, open. I appeared to be sleeping. I put my trembling hand on my face, or at least I tried to. My hand just passed though. I did exist, I was alive, but at the same time, I was nothing. I fell to the ground, I felt numb and empty inside. Where was I? Who was I? What was I going to do?
