If I Die Young

Everything was all right
We were driving down the road
Laughter poured out of us like hot lava
Only 4 hours to go

We were just a few kids
Grew up on the west coast
All we’ve seen is water and mountains

I think this is a dream
A mistake maybe

The sun was shining on us
The mountains were shards of hope
The sky went from bright blue linen
To dark pools of depression

Luggage filled the backseats
Barely room for the three of us
The mountains began to dance from left to right

The sun began to set and the road was difficult to decipher
The hills were sloping down

We were not happy
Nor smiling
I don’t know what came next

Everything was beautiful
And white

I have never heard music like this before
Seen these colors
Or this place
Everything was white

I think this is a dream

Am I supposed to be here?
My friends were not with me
I felt like I had not seen them in days, years even
Decades

There was no sense of time
Everyone knew everyone
Songs filled the air
People were dancing

I realized something
I left
I left my friends
My family
My life

I entered a new realm entirely
It was too late

The tire skid on a boulder that crashed down the mountain
I too I crashed down the mountain
I wondered where my friends went

It was all going right
We were driving down the road
Laughter spilled out of us

Everything was white
And it was beautiful
