He Was Just Snow and Ice
“I had a feeling that day. I couldn’t shake it. I left my coat at home and took the blue line bus to Portsmouth. I’ve always taken the green to school.”
“Interesting.” says the man behind the desk.
“It was snowing and my arms were bare, but I was warm when I walked to the rink. After five years, I still remembered how to get there. That’s where I saw him.”
“Saw who?” says the man behind the desk.
“Leo.”
“Leo Hollis?” says the man behind the desk
“Yes. He hadn’t changed at all. He flashed his Cheshire cat grin, like always, and asked if he could show me something. He took me to the edge of the woods, to this frozen pond. We both pulled off our boots and slipped around the ice in socks. Wind whipped snow at us but I was too warm to care. I felt happy for the first time since I could remember. I was unbelievably warm. He held me and we kissed. I was so warm I thought sure the woods would thaw to summer around us. I was so happy that I forgot how sad it all was.”
“Interesting.” says the man behind the desk.
“He said ‘I never got to do that.’
“And I said, ‘I’ve waited five years for that’.
“And he whispered, ‘I know.’
“Then I was freezing. I opened my eyes and no one was holding me. I was alone in the woods.”
“Interesting.” says the man behind the desk.
