August and June
August drove in peace and silence in nothing but the scorching hot black asphalt road, bright sunshine and sweet summer air. Not a building in sight, nothing but nice clean desert air. August laughed and laughed. His joyful mood became fractured by a void he remembered. He was missing something. He felt it. "June," August thought. August shattered the silence of the desert with his 1970’s sports car as he made a sharp u-turn.
August arrived; 1500 North Jackson Boulevard, miles and hours away from the desert. The steering wheel filled with residue from his sweaty palms. He grasped the car door and stepped out of the car in slowly. Footstep after footstep, August crept closer to June's front door. The tension grew as August reached for the doorbell. His heart raced. His mind was numb. At last, his soulless fingertips lightly touched the white small doorbell. No answer. He tried again. No sounds other than the birds chirping in the sunny day.
August took his footsteps toward the sidewalk into June's backyard. The scorching hot sun shone right in his eyes. August, with luck, entered through the opened back door. "June oh June where are you?" No response. August searched the bottom floor. He was only concerned with finding June. A sack of gold will not quench his insatiable appetite for finding June. That was his main concern, June and only June. He climbed the stairs and went to June's bedroom where she slept. "Oh June you know I loved you well girl. So well, oh so well," August laughed, "but today, I realized that I’m not worth anything in this damned town. Oh yes, you know it. Every one knows even those people who don’t know me. My looks display my character. You don’t need to know me. All this talk about not judging someone on their appearance is ridiculous. What you see is exactly, I mean exactly, what you get.” August stared into pure blindness, a puppet with no soul. June, startled by the peculiar situation, awoke. “What are you doing here August?! How did—”August’s eyes were filled with tears rushing down his cheeks. “June… I will be leaving and I won’t be coming back. I came to say goodbye.”
“Why August? Why? I told you I was sorry August. I just like your friend better because he’s not… I don’t know but he just understands me August!”
“I’m not leaving because of that June, I want to be free you know. I just believe my last words in this damned town should be to you… we had our moments and even though it never worked I still love you right now. I always will. We may not be together but in my heart you will always be with me. You’re the only person that kept me alive and thank you. I kn—” Before August finished uttering his last words August took a bullet directly to the head. June stood like a statue. Her shock and disbelief reached its peak. August was dead. June cried and cried as she cursed life. “You killed him! You—why?! Wh—” June, permanently frozen, took a bullet to the heart. The beautiful home August entered was now a morgue where June and August lay dead on the floor. August’s friend smiled, overlooking his lame paralyzed victims. “Now you won’t have to bother me no more. June and August forever and ever.”
