The Misunderstanding
Today is the day. Today is the day that I get to go to the coolest Halloween party with my best friends. I get to go to a party where the guy I really like will be, where music will be playing, and where everyone will be together.
“I’m on my way over. I’ll be there in five minutes,” Paige says to me through the phone.
“Okay,” I reply. “See you then.”
I put the phone down and walk over to my closet to take out my costume I am going to wear. I suddenly hear the door open downstairs.
“Spencer. I’m here,” I hear Kate downstairs.
“I’m in my room,” I yell down to her.
As she walks in the room, she puts her bag down and sits on the bed.
“Where’s Paige?” she asks.
“She just called. She’ll be her in a couple minutes.”
“Okay. I’m so excited,” she exclaims. “I can’t wait to go. So many people are going to be there.”
“I know. Me too. And Daren is going to be there. I hope he notices me.”
“Trust me Spencer, he will. Especially if you’re wearing that,” she says as she points to the Lady Gaga costume I picked out.
I laugh and walk over to the bed and sit down next to her.
“You really think so?”
“Yes, definitely,” she assures me.
I hear the door downstairs open again and I know this time it is Paige.
“We’re up here,” I yell down to her.
She walks in and greets us hello.
Paige, Kate, and I put our costumes on and admire how great we all look. We take a few pictures before leaving so we will never forget this night. It was getting close to when we needed to leave.
“The party starts at eight. When do you guys want to get there?” I ask Paige and Kate.
“Well, we don’t want to get there super early and be the only ones there because then it will be awkward just standing there,” Kate says.
“Yeah, but we don’t want to be late either. We should be casually late. Maybe we could leave in five minutes so that we will get there around ten after eight. Sound good?” Paige asks.
“I especially don’t want to be the only ones standing there. That sounds perfect,” I agree.
As it is time to leave, we all grab our phones and run out the door. We are all so excited, especially me because Daren will be there. We arrive at the party exactly at the time we hoped, ten after eight. Surprisingly, there is a great amount of people there.
“I’m going to go get a drink. Want anything?” Kate asks.
“Sure, grab me a coke please,” Paige answers.
“No thanks. I’m good right now,” I say.
We all go different ways and find other friends that we want to see. I walk into the house and see Daren sitting on the couch next to a couple of his friends as well as mine. As I was looking at him, he looks up and catches me staring. He smiles and waves his hand telling me to come over and sit with them. My heart races like a horse as I walk over there. I am so nervous. What if I say something wrong? I get lost in my thoughts and come back to reality when I realize I am standing right in front of him.
“Hey,” I say awkwardly.
“Hey,” he says back. “Take a seat. You look great.”
“Really? Thanks,”
We sit there for hours talking about school and just having a good time. Suddenly, he grabs for my hand and asks if he wants to go for a walk outside. I nod my head agreeing as we stand and exit the house.
“So what brought you to this party?” Daren asks me as we walk down the street.
“My friends and I wanted to get out, and a party seemed like the perfect thing”
He laughs and grabs for my hand again. Butterflies form in my stomach as I turn my head to look at him. Why is he so cute? Those eyes. His hair. Everything is so perfect. As I return to reality, I look at him and realize he is coming towards me. He leans in and gives me a kiss. I must have the biggest grin on my face. The butterflies are greater now and all I can do is smile.
We start to head back to the party when we see flashing red and blue lights flashing around the corner. We get to the corner and realize that the cops were at the party house.
“I don’t think we should go back there. We’re not in trouble now, why get into trouble,” he says to me.
“Yeah, I don’t want to go back there and risk getting into trouble,” I agree.
“Well, since we are not going back, may I offer you a ride home?” he smiles looking down at my grinning face.
“Yes you may,” I say with a big smile on my face.
As we arrive at my house, I thank him for the amazing night and he kisses me goodnight. I walk into my house and stand there for a minute thinking of the most amazing night of my life. I am so happy that I went to that party.
I walk up the stairs to get changed and come back down to get something small to eat before I go to bed. I wasn’t home for more than ten minutes when suddenly, there was a knock at my door. Who could possibly be here at this time? It’s midnight. I look through the tiny peephole to see who may be outside. Once I could see who it is, I quickly open the door.
“Hi, are Spencer Jennings?” the big man asks me.
“Yes sir. Is there a problem officer?”
“We need to speak to you about the party you attended this evening. Are your parents home?”
“Yes, wait here while I go and get them.”
I quickly run up the stairs and turn the corner to my parent’s bedroom. My heart is beating so fast. Why are they here? I wasn’t at the party when the cops showed up. I don’t know what to do. I realize I am now standing at the end of my parent’s bed. I wake my parents and tell them the police are downstairs and they rush out of bed and run downstairs. I have never seen them move so quickly.
“Is there a problem officer?” my mother asks.
“We are here to discuss the party your daughter attended. We found this at the party,” the officer states holding my cell phone in his hand.
“Oh my gosh. I forgot my phone. Thank you so much for bringing it to me,” I thank him.
I go to retrieve my phone when he snatches it back and says “We found some evidence on this phone and we need to take Spencer in for questioning.”
“What kind of evidence?” my father asks.
“We will discuss that when we arrive at the station. Let’s go.”
Now my heart is beating faster than before. I have no idea what is going on. What evidence could be on that cell phone? I didn’t do anything to it while I was at the party. The police officer takes me in the police car while my parents drive behind us. Sitting in this car makes me uncomfortable. I hate the thought that I am sitting in the same seat that a murderer once sat in. It gives me the creeps.
My thoughts take over the whole ride there, when suddenly I realize that the police officer is standing outside the open door yelling at me to exit the vehicle. I exit the vehicle and walk into the station with the officer holding my arm and directing me where to go. As I am walking in, I see Julia Deloren, a girl in my class, sitting with her mom at one of the officer’s desk. She doesn’t see me walk past, but I cant help thinking why she could be there.
The officer brought me into a small interrogation room with the one-way see through window and a table with a recording machine sitting on top of it. I am shaking at this point, knowing that I must have done something wrong, but I have no idea what it could be. Suddenly a different police officer with a long beard and mustache walks in and sits down.
“Hello, I am Officer Jones. Are you Spencer Jennings?”
“Yes, I am. Can you tell me what is going on because I have no idea what is happening?” I ask.
“Were you at the Halloween party this evening?”
“Yes, I was. But...” I start to continue when he interrupts me.
“What were you doing at this party? Tell me everything that happened.”
“I went to this party with my friends Kate Marshall and Paige Carter. We arrived a little after eight o’clock. When we got there we went our separate ways and I didn’t see them the rest of the night.”
“Where were you then?” he asks sternly.
“I was talking to this boy that I like and we talked for about an hour and a half to two hours. We decided to go for a walk around ten or ten thirty. I must have left my phone on the table I was sitting at before I left. Daren, the boy and I never came back. He took me home around eleven forty-five.”
“Well, around eleven, a phone call was made to another student in your class. The caller threatened this person’s life,” he pauses. “This call was made off of your phone Spencer. I need to know what you were doing at eleven this evening.”
“I already told you. I went for a walk with Daren. I wasn’t at the house at that time.”
The officer walks out of the small room and left me sitting there for a good hour waiting. I cannot believe what is happening. I am sitting in an interrogation room at the police station. What is going on with my life? I am sitting here staring at one-way see through window looking at my reflection. My heart is racing and I am scared.
Suddenly after waiting for so long, the same police officer walks back into the room and sits down.
“I just talked to the receiver of the call. I told her that we have somebody in custody, meaning you, and she said that you were not the person on the telephone. She is not one hundred percent sure who it may have been, but she is definitely sure that it was not you. I still have to ask a couple questions, since we do not have proof at the time, but you will be allowed to leave once the questioning is completed.”
A feeling of relief takes over. I am so glad that this is over, or at least over for now until the police figure out who called the girl.
“May I just ask? The person that received the call, was it Julia Deloren that received the call? I saw her sitting outside and I just wanted to thank her,” I question.
“Yes. It was Julia. And I will let her know of your appreciation.”
“Thank you so much.”
The officer walks out of the room and a new officer walks in to ask me some more questions. After another half hour of questioning, I am released from the police station. I am not aloud to retrieve my phone back due to legal purposes, but I don’t care. As long as I am going to get out of this station, I am happy. As I am walking through the station, I see Julia still sitting at the desk she was sitting at when I arrived. I walk up to her to give her thanks. I tell her how much I appreciate what she has done for me and I will never be able to repay her for all of what she has done.
“I am so relieved to be home,” I say as I walk through the front door.
“Next time, make sure your phone is with you at all times. We don’t need to go through something like this again,” my mom states.
“I wont, I promise.”
“Okay sweetie, I am going back to bed, I have had a long night and can use all the rest I can get. Goodnight,” mom says walking up the stairs.
“Okay goodnight. I am going to go to bed too, goodnight dad.”
“Goodnight sweetie. Sleep good,” day says.
I fall asleep in the matter of minutes. I need the sleep.
A few days go by and I can tell that Kate and Paige are acting completely different. They're always jumpy and nervous about something. It’s almost as if they are guilty of something.
The next day, I see Kate and Paige walking into the police station. I’m not too sure why though. But that night, I receive a phone call from the police department. Kate and Paige confessed to calling Julia the night of the party and are being charged for threatening her. I am shocked, knowing that these two girls are my best friends. I will not be able to trust them ever again but, the problem is finally solved. I am innocent and am so relieved that someone came clean, even if it means losing my best friends.
