CHAPTER ONE:
Promotion

“...and that concludes our program for today, December 24th 2099. Merry Christmas to all your listeners out there as we approach 9:45am this wonderful Thursday morning...” Lee turned the dial on the radio. “... and scientists say that the asteroid is less than a week away...” Lee turned the radio off, “Oh what is the world coming to” Lee thought to himself. Ever since the government sent all of the “useless” people to the newly commissioned Space Station ? about six months ago. He knew that they people that were sent up were nothing other than “Breeding stock” for the next generation of extraterrestrial based humans. His job was a Moniter, the Moniters, monitored the city, he was assigned to Seattle, they had to make sure that everybody was being useful in their mission to stop the asteroid from slamming into the middle of the Ring of Fire, setting off every volcano on earth and trigger massive earthquakes and tsunamis. Now all he could do was drive around in his Moniter Car looking for people not doing what they’re supposed to be doing, actually he wasn’t even doing that. Nowadays Lee just drove around passing time, waiting for the inevitable. That’s when he decided to turn right instead of left.

That day when Lee decided to turn right he came across the research facility after about twenty or thirty blocks. The research facility was designed to stop the end of the world and it is also where he was assigned his role as a Moniter. He stopped in front of it and after about ten minutes of wondering what could've made him come here he asked himself “I really don’t like being a Moniter. Do I?” and the answer was no, he really didn’t like it. So he decided to go in and ask for it to be reassigned.

As he got out of his car he came to grasp just how real the situation was, here he was. A guy that is basically asking to be a scientist, who didn’t even graduate from High School. If they gave him this job then the world really would be in trouble. Before he knew it, and could stop himself, he was knocking on the door to the President’s office, or at least that’s just what they called him, nobody knew his real name, it was even rumored that he himself forgot it. When the President opened the door he said “Lee, good to see you, I’ve been expecting you for some time.”
Absolutely flabbergasted, Lee said “Excuse me sir? Why were you expecting me?”
“Because you haven’t been exactly, overly enthusiastic, shall I say about being a Moniter”
“Well, sir it’s just that I feel like I could be doing...”
“More?” The President interrupted.
“Yes. How did you know that?”
“Because we’ve been keeping our eyes on you for the past couple of months, ever since you were assigned.” and before Lee could interject “That is why I am promoting you to Head Scientist.”
“Sir!? Why? You know as well as I do my training in that field! I didn’t even graduate from High School...”
“I already know that Lee, Give me any other reason why you shouldn’t be promoted.” But before Lee could give an example The President continued, he was obviously under a lot of stress “You may not have the largest understanding of how to stop an asteroid the size of Mount Everest but you have something much more important; instinct, and an abstract way of thinking. Either of those would be reason enough to have had you start out as our ‘Head Brain’ as we call them here, or just HB for short, but there were complications they didn’t want somebody without the necessary training to have such a crucial role in the saving of our planet. I have since convinced them otherwise. They only agreed because of the two previous reasons and the Asteroid being less than a week away, they didn’t see the solution that has been right in front of their faces until about one o'clock this morning.” There was a pause Lee was still trying to process all that he was just told. “Uhh, yeah, I guess I could try it, but somebody would have to teach me at least enough so that I will know what we are trying to do to stop the asteroid. Ok?” The President’s facial expression hinted that he expected as much and when he spoke he confirmed the suspicion. “Yes, we were going to teach you that if you wanted to learn or not. And since you want to learn, that will only make the whole learning process go by faster since you’ll be willing. Now I will see you to your quarters and your instruction will begin at once”

CHAPTER TWO:
Learning
Just then the door opened and a worker took Lee away, the worker had brown hair down to about his chin and wore black sunglasses even though he clearly wasn’t blind. The worker led him through a long complicated series of corridors. “Where are we going?” Lee asked the worker. “To the research lab, the first thing you have to do is get acquainted with your fellow scientists, your role of HB doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be doing any of the work, it just means that you have to tell the others what to do.” they stopped at a locked door and the worker leaned forward and an eye scanner scanned his eye, then he said “New eye ready” then to Lee, “ ok lead in and let it scan your eye, this will make it so that you can enter this door anytime you want.” Lee leaned forward and the machine scanned his eye and then said in a robotic voice “EYE RECORDED, PLEASE PROCEED” as the door in front of them suddenly opened without a sound.
Once they were inside the door closed, again without a sound, and the worker let out a pent up breath “Phew, glad that’s over. My name’s John by the way”. that took Lee be surprised, he didn’t expect such a change in John just from walking through a simple door “Ok, John, what exactly is going on here, I really don’t think everything is as you lead me to believe, you were just so official then after we went through the door you’re much more formal.” John replied with “haha, nothing strange is going on here Lee, just us trying to save the world, I didn’t think that we’d do it; but since we found you and you’re starting in on your work. Well, it’s huge relief, that’s all.” But Lee still wasn’t convinced.
There was a man standing in front of them by now wearing a white lab coat and a mullet haircut. “Hi” The man said. “This is Paul, he’ll be acting like your teacher, he’ll tell you everything you need to know to hopefully save the world.” John told Lee. “Nice to meet you Paul” said Lee to Paul. “Ok, yes, so we should probably start immediately. Follow me if you would.” Paul said after glancing at the clock on the wall, it read 11:00. Paul led Lee into a room full of equations and test tubes and diagrams. “So, this shouldn’t be that hard if you’re a quick learner. It’s not like its rocket science or anything... oh... wow... I really just said that... well, it technically is rocket science, but it’s not as hard as the saying leads you to believe” Paul started. “Oh, boy. This should be fun...” Lee said, heavy on the sarcasm. Paul drilled Lee on all that he knew about propulsion, thrust, gravity, how much fuel it would take to get a rocket with a 100 ton nuclear bomb on it, and the like. The only problem was that they were running out of time, even though Lee was learning at a very fast pace, they only really had 6 days left, at about 3:00 John came in with two other men following him and carrying a big tray of food. “This is Richard” he said gesturing to the man on his right “and this is George” gesturing to the man on his left, Richard had a peculiar look to him, big nose ears and mouth, and you could tell just from looking at him he was quirky and liked to have fun. George on the other hand, had a old, thin looking face and a mustache, actually both him and Richard had mustaches. “Nice to meet both of you, I’m Lee” Lee introduced himself to George and Richard. Then John placed the tray down on the table in the middle on the room and the five of them each took a seat and began to talk.
“So how’s it coming Paul?” asked John.
“Good, we’re making ok progress, actually it’s faster than I thought it’d be” replied Paul.
“Good, but when will he be ready to start working? Would tomorrow be too soon?” Asked Richard.
“Uhh, if you don’t mind filling him in on some of the more technical terms and other little bits here and there, then yes, I think Lee could be ready by 6:00 tomorrow morning” Paul said a little unsure.
“Ok, sounds like a plan,” said Richard. “Just make sure that he is ready, ok?”
“Ok” Paul sighed.
Lee was so busy eating that he missed most of the conversation “Ahh man, this food is fantastic!” he said completely at random. When everybody looked at him weird he added “What? It is.” and everybody laughed.
Lee and Paul worked non-stop until close to 10:00 that night when Paul finally said, “Well, I think that that’s about as good as we’re going to get it, you’d better go get some sleep, you’ve got a big day tomorrow after all” but Lee was already looking for a bed, “Where?” As he was saying that he saw another door on the far wall, it must have just opened. “In there, night” Paul said while pointing to the door as he was leaving.

CHAPTER THREE:
ADVENTURE
At 5:55 the next morning Richard’s voice came over the PA system in Lee’s room, “Wake up! You’re late!” Lee awoke with a start, all sleepiness gone. He got up and ran to the main room where John was waiting for him. “What did you wake me up early for? I still had 5 minutes to sleep!” Lee said with mock rage, it was met with a stern face “This is now time for joking around, we only have 6 days remember, now if you would please, Hurry up!” John snapped. They quickly made their way through the complex. “Can I have a map of this place or something? I’m getting nothing but confused by walking through here” Asked Lee. “Ok, I’ll get you one once we arrive” John replied. “Can I ask you something else John? I’ve only seen you, Paul, George, and Richard; and this place seems really empty to me. Where is everyone else?” There was a pause, then “Up there, in Space Station ?. We’re the only ones they left, and tell me this, how many other Moniters have you ever seen Lee?” That question took Lee by surprize but he said “None... we’re really the only ones left?” Lee said in a very, very mournful voice. “Yes, we’re all thats left.”
It was then that they reached another door, but before John opened it he told Lee “Don’t tell them I told you about us being the only ones left. ok?” “Ok.” Lee agreed. once the door opened Lee could see Paul, George and Richard working at their respective stations “Guys, HB’s here let’s get ready. Lee.” he said the last word while gesturing for Lee to give them orders of some sort. “Uhhh, perhaps you can start by telling me the recommended method of approach for, well, saving the world.”
“We were planning on launching a missile at it, it will embed itself in the asteroid's side and change its trajectory so it will fly harmlessly into the sun. As you may remember we tried that at the start if this month, and failed...” Richard answered
“So, now we need to think of another plan of attack? with only 6 days until estimated time of impact? Wow, that’s just great. Uhhh. let me think about this for a couple minutes.”
After about an hour Lee called the group back and asked them “What do we have to work with? What are all our options?”
It was George that answered him this time “Not much, just one rocket, for manned space travel.”
“Anything else? As far as explosives and fuel? How much of each?” Lee inquired
“Enough fuel to make it there, and not back with enough Nuke to blow it out of existence” George answered.
“Are there any other options available to us? Anything at all?” Lee asked.
“No, not really, unless we just all give up” Richard answered.
“Ok, here’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to send somebody up there to take the asteroid out. Any objections?”
“Yes, who’s going up?” All four of them said at once.
“Me. ok?” Lee Proclaimed. “And before you can object just let me say that all my life I’ve wanted to make a change in the world, or out of it as the case might be. All I’ve wanted to do was do something so that people will remember me long past the day I die. So I am going up. that’s that. I have only one question, When can I be on my way?”
George, Richard, Paul, and John were all quiet. “When can you have me up!?” Lee asked again, shouting this time. “We’re ready, we knew you were going to insist on doing that so we got it prepared for you about a week ago. are you ready?” asked Paul.
All Lee said was “Yes, let’s go.”

EPILOGUE:
WAS IT WORTH IT?
First off I would like to take you for reading My, Lucas’s, account on what happened Christmas Day of the year 2099. You’re probably wondering who I am by now, so I’ll tell you. I am the President. Haha, yes, I do have a name. I wrote this book so that the future generations of earth bound beings will be more careful with their planet, we knew that the asteroid was coming for about a decade now and we did nothing to stop it. none of the counties would work with one another to get anything done and it ended up in a nuclear war of which American one by sheltering it’s people underneath a giant done. A d after that the rest of the humans alive fled to Outer Space to escape the Radiation and they left 6 people back on earth, Lee, John, Paul, George, Richard, and myself because we were already doomed to death by radiation sickness.
Well let’s get to the point, you want to know if Lee saved the world don’t you? well, you’re alive to read this aren’t you? And yes, the names were changed because the effects of the radiation (I got the worst of it) made it impossible to remember anything for very long. So I picked the names I knew I could remember the most, John, Paul, George, Richard (better known as Ringo) and Lee after a famous rock group from for than 1000 years ago, (Although I don’t think Lee was a member) they were my inspiration from writing this journal for future generations of Earth bound humans. anyway I feel the effects of the radiation sickness taking it’s final tolls on me and I fear that I will not like much longer.
Good bye, and good luck.
