In the November 2013 issue of Teen Ink, Jillian Medugno’s article, “Thank You, America,” enlightened me. I have had a similar problem to Jillian’s for most of my life. My mom can’t get better than a factory job that pays little, so we have to have government insurance. For a few years, I received free lunches at school due to a lack of family funds. Multiple times my mother and I have had to put back items in the store because we didn’t have enough food stamps. My mom has broken down in tears because of the stress. It is a stressful situation for the children too. Sadly, many U.S. citizens fall into this tragic group known only as food stamp users, and this article reminded me of the problem in our country. People seem to hate us, but Jillian is correct. We have to prove that the bet placed on us by the United States is worth making.
