E-books Or Printed Books?
E-reader Or Printed Books?
Would you rather read a book on paper or of an electronic? Two students named Brandon and Isabel both wrote letters to their school newspaper editor about both e-readers and printed books. Both authors used very unique reasoning on why either e-books are or better or why printed books are better. They also had similar reasons as well.
Brandon who was for e-readers used a very unique reason to tell why there should be more e-readers in schools. “E-books don’t require paper because you download them onto your e-reader. An e-reader can store hundreds of books, and you can replace them as often as you want without using paper. Think of all the forests that could be saved if people read e-books.” I thought this was a unique reasoning because Isabel didn’t even mentioned nothing about the environment and he also got an outlook by a real doctor about it.
Isabel who was against having e-readers in the school also used a very unique reason why there should be no e-readers. “They are fragile and can be damaged easily. Dropping a device or spilling water on it could be the end of your e-reader… Of course if you drop a book , all you have to do is pick it up and continue to read . Even if you spill something on it, you can probably still read it after the pages dry. In any case, a printed book is less expensive to replace than an e-reader.” I thought this was an unique reason why people should use printed books because she explains that they are very expensive and hard to replace unlike a regular printed book.
A similar reason that they both use is how both the e-reader and the printed books affect you physically. Isabel states that e-readers are bad for your eyes. “Another downside to reading electronic books is the eyestrain that comes from staring at the e-reader screen for hours. Your eyes might get a little fatigued from reading a printed book, but the strain from staring at a screen is much worse.” Brandon complained about how the e-readers would be better on their backs since its much lighter. “Another great thing about e-books is that they are portable. Students book bags would be much lighter if our textbooks were electronic… What about our poor little backs? My science books weighs about ten pounds, and thats one textbook!” I think these two reasons are very similar because they both mentioned how both printed books and e-books have drawbacks relating to physical pain.
As you can see, both e-readers and printed books have some drawbacks, but they both also have advantages. This is important because now we can see how printed books and e-books compare to each other. So next time you decide to read a book, what will you choose?
