We all know that technology has basically taken over with computers and TVs. Well now there’s something that’s so popular but is also hated. eBooks are one of the newer things in the technology world and they’re simply tablets that you can download and read books on. That sounds pretty cool, right? Well, many people would disagree. Although eBooks are better for our environment and much better for our backs, they’re bad for your eyes and pretty expensive to replace if something happens to it.
Isabel Arroyo is the author of a passage that states why printed books are much better than eBooks. She states first that printed books are much easier to replace, and they’re a lot cheaper than eBooks. For example, Isabel states “even if you spill something on it, you can probably still read it after the pages dry.” And even if the book wasn’t alright, you could just buy another one and it most likely wouldn’t cost too much. But if you spill water on an eBook, it’s over. The eBook most likely wouldn’t work anymore and you would have to buy a new one which would cost a lot of money.
While Isabel argues with that point, Brandon O’Rourke argues in his own passage that even though eBooks are hard to replace, they’re better for our environment; and this is very true. Books come from paper which comes from trees, right? Well think about all of the trees that were chopped down just to print a book! eBooks may be expensive, but they’re electronic so they don’t use paper, which saves a lot of trees.
Isabel also states in her passage that eBooks put a lot of strain on your eyes. The more you stare at that tablet, the more strain you put on your eyes. All of that strain could lead to pain, especially in a head-ache. So is all of the pain really worth it when you could have just picked up a printed book and not go through any pain?
Well, almost no pain. Brandon comes back to argue that yes, eBooks may strain your eyes, but printed books could strain your back. Think about it, when you’re walking to or from school, don’t those heavy books in your backpack hurt your back? Well, with an eBook, you only need to carry the tablet around and it could have all of your books downloaded onto it. So your backpack would be much lighter and wouldn’t hurt your back.
Now, obviously Isabel and Brandon are on two different sides of one argument but there is something similar between eBooks and printed books. That similarity? They’re both portable! And both Isabel and Brandon say this in their passages. Even if one’s heavier than the other, you can take either one with you wherever you go!
So in conclusion, yes, technology has now somewhat taken over the reading world with eBooks but there are some advantages to that, right? It’s better for our environment and our backs! Though, printed books will never just be forgotten, especially when they have advantages too. They’re better for our eyes and they’re easier to replace than an eBook. Whether someone chooses one over the other is their decision. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter. A book’s a book, right? No matter how it made, you can still enjoy it.
