The Twins Connection

It was a  warm Sunday afternoon in Melbourne, Australia. The season of spring filled the November air as the flowers bloomed and the days grew longer. Miranda and her twin sister Katia sat in the living room reading old mysteries to each other, which was a common routine. The girls enjoyed reading mystery novels, and would always write down all the clues the detective in the story missed. The doorbell rang and Katia went to the door to tell whoever was there that they were closed, and to come back tomorrow. Miranda glanced up at the door and saw two identical twin girls. They looked like young teenagers and appeared to be weakened by illness.
“ My name is Emry and she is Kysa,” the girl said motioning for her sister to speak up.
“ We are 15 years old and are from Georgetown. We flew on a helicopter this morning and took the bus the rest of the way to get here.” Kysa said,  crinkling a paper in her hand.
“ What is that you’re holding?” Katia asked, concerned that the two young girls came all this way alone.
“ It is why we are here. Our mother died just a year ago from a rare disease. Emry and I were forced to accept the fact that we would never know how our mother got sick. However, just a week ago, we were cleaning the attic, and found a chest, where our mother kept her personal items. We found this letter in her jewelry box and we didn’t know what to do, so we came here.”
Kysa handed the letter for Katia and Miranda to read. The letter read, Dear Emry and Kysa, I have been sick for quite some time. I will be dead soon and it is important that you know that I love you. I have been injected with some rare illness that I don’t know the name of. I am willing to die so that you may live. When you find this letter please go to Melbourne and find a detective. Also,  please beware of your uncle. Signed, Mary Clasky.
The girls had tears in their eyes as they watched Miranda and Katia read the letter.
Miranda spoke up, wanting to know more information.
“ Do you believe that your uncle may have killed your mother?”
“ Yes, he is a doctor, so he could have access to many disease specimens.” Emry said calmly, as if she rehearsed how she would explain the case.
“ I feel that there is more to this case  than your uncle possibly murdering your mother. There must be a motive and some backstory that led to this,” Miranda explained, very curious as to why the case seemed so simple to solve. Miranda knew better than to go to Georgetown and arrest their uncle without a deep investigation.
“We must all go to Georgetown then,” Katia said, interrupting everyone’s thoughts. “I will call Evan our police detective and we will be there tonight.”
“Not so fast Katia, I will think about taking your case, but for now you must both go home.” Miranda said. The girls walked out in defeat, as they made their way to the bus stop.
“ Why did you do that,” Katia said, upset with Miranda.
“ Miranda, I really think that we should take the case,” Katarina exclaimed. “ I think you understand how serious this could be.”
“ We are currently working four cases, a fifth one would be unreasonable. We wouldn’t be able to put our best effort in it.”
“ I know I could put great effort into it. Those twins need us,” Katia said, pleading with her sister.
“ What makes this case so much different than the others, you are never this devoted to a case,” Miranda said, testing her.
“ Well….,” Katia paused to think about her answer. “ No one as young as them had ever reached out to us for help in an investigation. When the girls showed up at our doorstep , they looked so scared and tired; and I couldn’t help but notice how sick they were. Also they kind of remind me of us, when we were their age.”
“ I know what you mean. I am very concerned about their situation, but that doesn’t mean we should take them as clients.” Miranda was being stubborn like she usually was, always trying to talk herself out of a case.
In defeat, Katarina gave it her last try, “ but they’re Identical twins just like us, I just feel like we have a connection with them, they are so similar to us in many ways, we need to help them.”
“ Obsessed much,” Miranda said amused by her sister’s love for the twins.
“ They just lost their mother, and us of all people should understand the emptiness that comes with that. There is just something about them that really draws them to me.”
“ I know Katia, they are pretty special.”
Miranda and Katia have always been similar but yet very different. Every aspect of them matched up completely, even things that are not genetically possible in most twins.  Growing up, Miranda and Katia were always different from the other kids. Their unusual hair and eyes that changed colors periodically, were some of the many interesting features they possessed. Miranda chose to become a private investigator when she was 17 years old. As a child, the older she got, the more she began to discover all of unique characteristics about herself,  and what they meant. At only 3 days old, the twins were dropped off at a hospital by an unknown woman. Ever since then, the girls have worked hard to find out where they came from.  In the meantime,  Miranda  devotes her time to living a normal life that isn’t full of mystery, while Katia embraces who she is. Evan a detective, suggested years ago that they should put their incredible skills to work to help other people. Since then, Evan been working with the girls as a police detective that handles all of the dirty work such as warrants and arrests.

The next day Miranda, Katia and Evan boarded a plane to Georgetown to meet with the girls to find more information about the case. The team was met with Emry and Kysa to go meet Dr. Clasky.
“Hello, my name is Dr. Clasky,” the father said, interrupting everyone’s thoughts. “If you are here to schedule an appointment, please wait right here.”
“Actually, we are here to talk to you about the death of your wife.” Evan said, not trying to butter up the reason they were there.
“What is it you need to know? I’ve already talked to the police about Mary’s death.”  Dr. Clasky said uncomfortably. “ And besides, it was over a year ago.”
“I have some questions about you and your brother.” Katia said harmlessly.
“What is it you practice in medicine? And what was your wife’s job?”
“ I am a neurosurgeon, I study the brain. Mary was a Neuroscientist, we worked together. She made discoveries, and I was able to add them to my  practice,” the doctor said with excitement racing through his eyes.
“ And what about your brother?” Katia asked.
“ My brother, Dr. John Clasky,  is a pediatrician. He has his own practice in Queenstown.
“ I see.” Katia said, very curious as to why their uncle is a suspect .
“ As a doctor, you must be aware of the rare condition that your wife died from.” Miranda said, taking over as Evan and Katia took notes.
“ Yes I am. She died from Kuru which is a disease that causes major brain damage.”
“ How could your wife contract such a disease?”
“ I think that will be all for today, “ Evan said before Miranda could ask anymore questions. Miranda said goodbye to the twins and the three of them made their way back to their hotel
“ Why did you stop me? I was just about to ask Doctor Clasky about his lab.” Miranda said angrily.
“  I knew you were, that is why I stopped you. Don’t you think it is a little suspicious that the doctor was giving us all that information? How do you think a pediatrician would get access to the disease Kuru? This kind of crime would have to be done by a brain doctor.”
“I will call the twins and ask them to unlock their fathers lab for us,” Miranda said grabbing for her phone.”
“ Ok, but I probably won’t be able to get a warrant on such a short notice.” Evan said.
Miranda brushed him off saying, “ Warrants are just a technicality, we don’t need it.”

That night Miranda, Katia and Evan snuck into Dr. Clasky’s lab.
“ Look at all the patients records and surgery procedures for everything. Also look for medication records.” Miranda said, taking charge.
Miranda looked around the lab and came across a family record book on the the twins.
“ Katia, Evan come quick, you must see what I found. These are all the surgery records, and look what they are saying.” Katia and Evan read over some of the papers.
“Look at this record.” Katia said, “this man had a very small tumor on the left side of the brain that was supposed to be removed  by injecting the tumor with a chemical. But the surgery report is different. Doctor Clasky removed half the man’s brain, cut out the tumor and then tried to put the brain back. The surgery was unsuccessful and the man died from numerous infections.”
“ All the other patients went through similar experiments. Many patients went through minor procedures, but some unlucky patients went through procedures so severe that there was no possible way for there to be any survival.”
Many hours passed as the girls and Evan went through Doctor Clasky’s stuff.
When morning came the detectives left the lab and went to their hotel to review some files.
“ Evan can you take a look at this?” Katia said yawning through her words.
“ Can Miranda do it, I just found something very interesting.”
“ What did you find Evan?”
“ This record shows that a man in Australia had the disease Kuru about two years ago and died. However, this man was not one of Doctor Clasky’s patients.
“ Well maybe when the man died they sent the body to Doctor Clasky’s wife since she was a brain scientist.” Katia said motioning for Miranda to pay attention.” Maybe she got the disease that way.”
“That’s very unlikely,” Miranda said. “ Mary was a well trained scientist, she would never fully expose herself to a rare and incurable disease. There has to be more.”
“ I hear what you are saying,” Katia said angrily, mad that she didn’t figure it out first.  “ Anyway, this is more interesting.” Miranda said, as she lifted a paper to read out loud.
“These medical records state that Emry and Kysa have had Tuberculosis, Malaria and many other illnesses and recovered fully each time.Their never sick for long either. Whatever sickness they catch is miraculously cured over a short period of time. This doesn’t make sense, because tuberculosis itself, requires a year recovery.”
“  It seems as if the girls have an indestructive immune system and can never get sick.” Evan said.
“ Maybe that’s why Dr. Clasky has been poisoning the girls. He knows about their special capabilities,” Katia said
“ That means that the father has been doing brain experiments on the girls and that is why they are always sick.” Evan said.
“ But how does that solve the mother’s death, Miranda?”
“Oh my, how could I have not see this before. hen I saw the Doctor’s patient records, I wondered how the he could do these surgeries by himself.” Miranda said.
“ Are you saying that  Dr. Clasky, his wife and brother were partners and they did these things?” Katia said.
“ Yes and when the twins got sick from Tuberculosis, the father was amazed at how fast they recovered and decided he should experiment on them. The mother must of found out and tried to stop him, so the uncle killed her to protect his brother.”
“ What makes you think the brother killed Mary and not her husband?”
“ Because of the note the mother left before she died. Mary said to beware of the girl’s uncle, She knew what was happening. “
“ We must arrest the twins uncle and father before it is too late.” Evan said, grabbing his badge, gun and calling for backup.
The team drove back to the twins house frantically. They ran into the office just in time to find the girl’s father and uncle beginning an operation on the twins. Evan was able to stop the men from harming the twins, and the officers took over by arresting them. Paramedics filled the lab and the girls were taken to the hospital. Six weeks later the girls were released and went to live with Miranda and Katia in Melbourne. As for their father, he was sent to prison for life and his brother for twenty five years.
The girls went on to live a healthy normal life and the investigation team went on to solve more crimes.
