The Cliff

My sisters and I shook while we watched the waves crash against the rocks 50 feet beneath us. The wind blew harder and the current in the water picked up. The cliff’s edges were smooth and solid. We were frightened by what we were about to do, even though we all knew it would be a blast, we were still scared of what might happen if something went wrong.

One hot and windy July day my family was on our annual vacation to Table Rock Lake in Missouri. We were boating and doing water sports as always when we came across a cliff. We saw people doing flips and other cool tricks off of it. So my older sister, younger sister, and I all begged to go jump off of it. Our parents finally agreed so we jumped out of the boat and swam to the bottom of the cliff.

Then we began to pull ourselves out of the water on to a ledge. I went first grabbing a rock above me and pulling myself up. Then we walked on an edge to get to the next part. We climbed very carefully to make sure none of us fell. Eventually all of us successfully got to the top, it felt really good up at the top, you felt free. The sun was beating down on us and the wind gave a nice breeze.

I became very nervous when it was time for us to jump down. We were all scared because an injury could happen if we fell or jumped wrong. Finally my older sister agreed to go. She jumped and she loved it, next my younger sister went she screamed and laughed. She seemed to love it too.

Now it was my turn, and the wind seemed to pick up and a cloud went over the sun. I could see the waves of the lake crashing beneath me and my sisters yelling at me to jump. I moved closer to the edge scared of what was about to happen. I didn’t like heights very much but that didn’t occur to me until I was already up there. I took a step closer, closed my eyes, and jumped.

I hit the water with a splash. It was the most exciting thing I had ever experienced. It felt like I was flying and I could do anything. Since my sisters and I all loved it we went back up and did it over and over again! I was really proud of myself considering I was seven. Every year since then we always go jump off the cliffs at our vacation there. That day I learned to always try new things because you could be missing out on something if you don’t try it!
