Personal Narrative
My Great Grandpa was very important to me. He lived in a small apartment that we would visit every few months, because it was a long drive up there. Well not to long but a good hour and a half at least. He fought in the army and received many awards. He was one of the few people that survived World War 2. One of the awards that he received was the “purple heart”, which I don’t know much about, but I’m pretty sure it was one of the highest rewards you could receive. He had some memory issues towards the end of his life that I think had to do with him being in the war and seeing all of his friends die right next to him.
He loved apple pie, every time we went to visit we would have to rush and get one. When we went over we would always play poker and bingo. You would always want to win because they he gave a lot of money to the winner. Although you also got some if you lost. I think one time we even got a hundred dollars after playing a game of bingo, and I lost. I always lost when we played because I would never get any of my numbers called. After we played bingo we would always have the apple pie that we rushed to get and some ice cream. We didn’t watch television much there because it was always on the same channel, and that channel usually was one of those music channels that just plays old music. When you did watch television there though you would sit in the blue chair. Just because it was comfortable and in the best position towards the television. Also it was a recliner chair and the only other place to sit was on the couch. Which was facing sideways to the television so it was at a very bad angle. The car rides up there made me not like going, especially when it was only like a one to two hour visit. If he lived closer I wouldn't have minded it as much, but he didn't.
My Great Grandpa sadly passed away a few months ago. It was very sad when it happened, but at least he died in his sleep, so it was painless for him. When we went to his funeral it was a very depressing environment. The visage on everyone's face was one that you don't want to see often. It was weird to not be able to talk to him anymore yet his body was still there in that very room I was. After though we all went out to a fancy restaurant which brightened the day a little bit. Although we had a long car ride back after so none of us wanted to leave. I don't remember too well, but the car ride to the funeral and wake was even longer than the ride to my grandpas apartment. We still visit their apartment every once and a while today because my great grandma still lives there.
When we go over it's not the same as it was before. It's kinda weird without him, but we still do everything we did before and rush to get a pie when we go. We still play bingo and poker together just with one less person. This was some adversity that I faced in my life. It was a tough thing to happen, but I got through it. Its still not the same every time we go over to their apartment, but I am slightly getting more used to it every time we go over. That is my personal narrative and how I overcame some adversity in my life.
