Ever since I was little, I have always wanted a dog. My sisters and I would complain everyday to my parents about it. Whenever I would give my parents a good list of reasons why the family should get one, they would always tell me how I needed to be more responsible. I always thought they were crazy because I was only in the first grade. How much responsibility could I have at such a young age? So I started doing small things like making my bed, taking down my dirty clothes and setting the table. My sisters and I worked hard but it seemed like my parents didn’t even notice. We continued to beg but nothing seemed to be working.

One morning at about 5:30, my parents came into my room to wake me up along with my sisters. They told us to get up and get dressed because they were taking us to a small town our family friends were telling us about. I was very excited because I was missing school. Other then that, I didn’t care about the town or anything else. After getting ready quickly, we began our way to the small town my parents were raving about. The car ride was only two hours long but it felt like forever. I feel asleep for most of it but was woken up once again by my dad. He told me we were stopping at McDonalds to eat lunch. We went through the drive through and my mom pulled in a parking spot and we ate our lunch in the car. I was really confused because I thought it was weird that we wouldn’t just eat inside. All of a sudden, my dad turned around with his camera recording us. “Do you girls really want to know why were here?” my mom asked us. My sisters and I looked around at each other. We all just shook our heads no. My mom started smiling and screamed, “Were getting a dog!” At first I didn’t believe it. I was so shocked and surprised all at once. Finally, I realized it was true and started screaming along with my sisters. After everyone calmed down we started to drive to the dog shelter. Once we got there, I ran out of the car. I was so excited! When my family walked in, the lady at the front desk had to check us in. Sitting in that small room, waiting to get a dog was the hardest part of the day. I was so anxious. Later, I found out that there was a dog already picked out for us. Since we were adopting from the Seeing Eye Dog Foundation, my families name had been on a waiting list for 5 years. Finally they had a dog for us.

A half and hour later, a women took us to introduce us to our new dog, Treasure. I was disappointed because she already had a name picked out, but it didn’t matter as long as I was getting a dog. All of a sudden, a small Golden Retriever came running down the stairs. We all started cheering and my mom even cried. Everyone was so happy. I grabbed Treasure and gave her a big hug. All I wanted to do was take her home and play with her. Finally, after my parents singed a bunch of important papers and made a donation to the foundation, we were on our way back to Commack. The whole car ride home was filled with smiles. When we got home after a long car ride, the first thing we did was bring Treasure over to my neighbors house to show them the new edition to our family. Treasure got along with them very well. She was such a friendly dog and everyone loved her. We took her in our backyard and played with her for the rest of the day. That night, I went to bed really late just because I wanted to stay with Treasure. I was so happy that we finally got a dog it didn’t even feel real. The next morning I couldn’t even get ready for school. All my sisters and I wanted to do was spend time with Treasure. I told everyone in school about Treasure and how great she was. Everyone said they wanted to meet her.

I was so thankful that my parents had decided to let us get a dog. Im glad that out of all the dogs in the world we were able to adopt Treasure. I guess being responsible payed off. Now I know that when people want something, they have to work to get it. People do not just get things handed to them. They have to prove that what they want matters to them and thats exactly what I did with Treasure.
