I was texting. My seven year old little sister, Kirsten, was lying beside me on the bed, making shadow puppets from the glow, sweeping a halo of light onto the dark ceiling. She balled her fists together then whispered, "Look, I'm a ball of garbage." To be honest, I was interested, being that I'd NEVER heard that one before. And the most magical thing happened. She unballed her fists, extended her fingers, hooked her thumbs together, and said with a brightly-lit grin, "Now, I'm a butterfly." At that moment, I realized how art is made. A person with any type of passion, whether it be sports, music, dance, or whatever, takes something that seems to be garbage to the rest of the world. Then, with determination, insight, and faith, turn it into one of the most beautiful things in life. She's asleep now, breathing deeply. I hope her dreams are as sweet as she is inspiring.
