Meeting Tom Izzo
This story is about how I meet the Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo and how we were able to talk to him in public after my mom won 3rd place of her age group and got a medal. My mom got her sweater signed by Tom Izzo and we talked with him a little about how he was doing.
Chapter 1: Riverbank Run I heard a rumbling, louder than thunder in a bad storm, the ground was shaking like a very small earthquake. I was waiting for my sister and mom to finish the 5k Riverbank run. All of the runners were now crossing the finish line, the first guy that finished was sweating a lot and his face was red from pushing himself so hard. Then, after a couple of people crossed the line I saw my mom and sister.
“Go Thao! Go mom!” I yelled hoping for them to beat the people ahead of them. My mom started picking up speed, passing 3 other people in front of her, then crossing the finish line. I thought wow, Mom did good. She got 3rd place in her age group out of a lot of people that were racing. Shortly after my sister finished. My dad and I went to find them in the crowd of runners that was returning. While we were walking out of the racing area my dad mentioned some burgers.
“Wanna go for some yummy burgers anyone?” My dad asked. I imagined the thought of some yummy, tasty, salty, and juicy burgers was amazing and in a better term devine.
“Sure. After a hard workout I deserve a burger,” replied my mom. After that we decided to eat at T.G.I Fridays’. Then we began to push for our way out, trying not to get plowed over by people. We pushed and pushed, we got out after awhile, thankfully too. All of my family (and me) kept walking but on our way to the car we bumped into an old guy.
“Sorry Mister,” my dad said. They guy turned around saying something but we weren’t paying attention to that. The old guy, right in front of us, looking my dad in the eye, was the basketball coach for Michigan State, Tom Izzo!
My dad started going a little crazy with all of his basketball talk. He was talking to Tom Izzo about some of his players. One player my dad kept mentioning was Draymond Green.
“TOM IZZO!! We are huge fans of yours and we watch how you guys play a lot. One player who's really good is that Draymond Green player. Boy can he play,” my dad rambled on.
Green was a really good player, one thing that’s hard to get in basketball is a triple double (a triple double is when you have over 10 points, over 10 assist, and over 10 rebounds). In 2 years Draymond Green had 8 triple-doubles and was drafted to the NBA when he was around 22-23 years old. My dad also told Tom Izzo about me and how good I was at basketball.
Tom Izzo seemed interested about my basketball career.
“Come here kid,” Tom Izzo told me. I walked up to him and he squatted down to tell me something. “From what I hear from your dad, he seems to know a lot about basketball. And you sound like a good player. Don’t give up on your dreams and someday you could play for the Michigan State Spartans for me as a coach.” Then hearing that coming from Tom Izzo inspired me to try my hardest to achieve my dreams to be a Spartan basketball player then move up to the NBA. What I learned from Tom Izzo was if you work hard enough you can achieve anything.

The thing that insipired me was that no matter what you can achieve anything if you try hard enough. If you push yourself to go beyond the limit then you can achieve your dreams.
