Hard Work Pays Off
“Alux, you have a reading disorder.” Mrs. B told me. Living with reading problems was and still can be difficult sometimes, but with hard work I overcame them and can read as normal as everyone else.
I can’t read this its so confusing: it’s blurry and the words don’t make sense I thought to myself.
“Alux do you need help, you look like you're having some trouble?” my teacher asked.
“No, I’m okay.” I responded. my teacher started calling people into the hall to take the fluency test in alphabetical order I'm next, don’t freak out I told myself.
“Alux Coale!” my teacher shouted from the hall. I got up and walked to the table in the hall and sat down next to her.
“Can you read this outloud for me.” my teacher asked.
“Ok.” I responded. I started to read but quickly noticed that the words were blurring together and words didn't make sense.
“I’m sorry I can’t read it.” I said in a nervous and disappointed voice. She looked at me puzzled.
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“I don’t know the words don’t make any sense.” I responded.
...
Ring Ring … Ring Ring the phone blared breaking the silence in the class.
“Hello, yes - yes okay, Alux the office is calling can you go down.. okay bye” my teacher informed me. I got up and walked down to the office.
“Hi, Alux how are you?” the women at the desk asked.
“Good” I responded.
“Thats nice, do you know where Mrs. B’s room she would like to see you.” She asked me.
“Yes.” I responded. I started to walk down to her class when I got there I knocked on the door.
“Hi, Alux come in sit down” Mrs. B answered. I sat down and started to look around I knew that this was the room for people who needed help reading and then I realized why I was there.
“Can you read this for me Alux?” Mrs. B asked. I looked at the list of words and started to read.
“Umm, snap, bog, look, ba... I can’t read it.” I read.
“That's okay try the rest.” She encouraged me. I continued to read but the words were really hard to understand. Mrs. B stood up and walked over to the cabinet and grabbed a pair of glasses.
“These are reading glasses, I think they might help try them on and read the list again.” Mrs. B said... I tried to read the list but it was the same: I couldn’t read it.
“No it's still hard to read.” I said...... She gave me the same puzzled look my teacher gave me; it made me feel really dumb.
“I think that instead of going to your normal reading class you will come here instead and read with me.” Mrs. B said...
...
“So it’s been 2 months that you’ve been reading with me, I’ve already talked to your parents but I think you have some kind of reading disorder.” Mrs. B told me. The rest she said.. was kind of a blur but I realized that I wasn’t just dumb there was actually something wrong with my brain that was stopping me from being able to read normally.
“You are still going to read with me and by the time were done I think you’ll be able to read as normal as anyone else, but it’s going to take a lot of hard work. For the next 2 years I read with Mrs. B and we worked together to solve this problem I had. At home I read with my parents the same way I did with Mrs. B. It was definitely hard at times but trust me when I say it payed off.
...
“The moment of truth Alux let's see if your ready to go to the normal fourth grade reading class.” Mrs. B said... She put a book on the desk and asked me to read it. This is it if I read at the same level as my classmates then all this hard work will have payed off I told myself. I started to read it and immediately noticed that I could read it, of course I got stuck on a few words but so would anyone else.
“Well Alux you’ve done it, you can read at the normal reading fourth grade reading level.” Mrs. B informed me. That night my family and I had a mini celebration. Everyone knew how hard I worked and how big of an achievement this was for me.
I would have never been a good reader without the help of Mrs. B and I would have never learned that hard work really does pay off.
