The Madness Misconception
In modern day society, people who talk to themselves are frowned upon. Parents who see their children muttering to themselves are greatly alarmed because mumblers are seen as insane and abnormal. On the contrary, scientists have discovered (through a great series of studies!) that talking to oneself is actually quite common. In fact, talking to oneself even has emotional and psychological benefits. In one study conducted by Dr. Adam Winsler of George Mason University, he declared that kindergarteners who talked to themselves were more likely to participate in class because of their higher levels of confidence. Additionally, talking to oneself allowed people to better motivate themselves and focus their attention on any one topic or problem. Further studies concluded that talking to oneself not only relieved stress and loneliness of the individual but also improved the memory and boosted brain power! Thus, worried fathers and mothers are mistaken—talking to oneself is not a sign of craziness. Rather, it is completely healthy and normal.
