The Shooting
Ken asked his father Jessie about his brother Alvin. His father told him the story of his death. He said in 1958 you and Alvin were watching the gas station while I was getting lunch for y’all when all I see is a black 1955 Ford F-100 pull up in front. I saw a guy in a black hoodie get out, he had his hand up his hoodie, but I thought maybe he is getting his wallet out.
When he got to the door he pulled out a 45 [hand gun] and fired. I ran back inside to his back facing me, so I put him in a choke hold and told Alvin to call 911 but before he Alvin could get to the phone, the robber fired. It felt like my heart dropped out of my body.
I got up and let him go, he ran out the door, but I ran over to Alvin, he wasn’t moving so I got up and chased after him, he stalled the pick-up and hit a gas pump. A witness called the cops when he heard the first shot. The cops arrived before he could get away and arrested him. I yelled at the paramedics “my son is shot he is in the gas station. They rushed inside but it was too late he was gone. I called your name and you said “down here under the counter”. I pulled you out and put you in the car and followed the ambulance to the hospital but it was too late. Later that night the robber/murderer was locked up and charged with 1st degree murder. That’s all I can remember son just remember son be safe because it’s a jungle out there.
