Should Gay Marriage Be Legal?

While it may seem to some that gay marriage is untraditional, it is actually about not shaming people for who they love and allowing them equality, because it being illegal isolates them and makes discrimination against them seem okay. Same-sex couples should be allowed to celebrate their commitment in the same way heterosexual couples do, especially since it’s protected by the constitutions rights to liberty and equality; which homosexual couples are deprived of.

One cannot disregard that the institution of marriage has traditionally been defined as, between man and woman, but who decided it was okay that love was illegal? Gay marriage being illegal is something we’re going to look back at and think it was just as ridiculous as racism. There will always be closed-minded people that will not agree, but if that’s the case they just don’t have to participate in same-sex marriage; simple really. Just like you don’t have to be involved with supporting causes, but you don’t have to be intolerant toward they're efforts . Like James Howe said “Another Thing I'm Sick of Hearing: If I started that gay rights group, I must be gay. So if I start an animal rights group, what does that make me? A giraffe?” Legalizing it isn’t going to force people who don’t believe in gay marriage to do it, it will just allow people who do a choice.

Although gay marriage doesn’t greatly directly affect people who are against it, they would be paying taxes for something they don’t believe in. Nevertheless it would be financially beneficial to state and local governments. Plus, it would not harm heterosexual marriages and family values. So all around it would better society, because it would also offer stable homes for kids in foster care and not to mention it’s legalization is correlated with lower divorce rates.

Gay marriage is redefined as societies attitudes evolve and it’s something that will change things in a positive way. Open mindedness and being accepting of others differences is essential for a better world and legalizing same-sex marriage would get us another step closer. No matter our differences, no one should be ashamed to publicly show or say who they are. Individuality is important and everyone should feel comfortable with themselves and not be seen as inferior, because some law says the can’t marry the one they love. It’s said America is the land of the free, but we aren’t free to marry who we like.

There are more pros than cons when talking about the legalization of gay marriage, so why not take the steps to making it legal? Societies evolution may come with ideas we don’t agree with, but we can overcome such obstacles by being tolerant and being open to new things. Maybe you’re not gay, but that doesn’t mean that people who are should get less rights than you. We can do something about it and it’s time we take a stand.
