What Matters...
How many times have you looked in the mirror and not liked what you saw? We all know the feeling. Many of us try to improve ourselves in small ways- that touch of mascara in the morning or avoiding the ice cream. But what happens when we take it too far? When we decide that we’ll do anything to look perfect, like taking drugs to stay thin. Many physical and emotional disorders are caused by the simple need to feel beautiful. However, this push to become faultless doesn’t just appear from nowhere. Social media and society itself emphasize this cookie cutter picture of what it means to be beautiful. Many people take this image to heart. We spend so much time on becoming pretty; we forget what it really means to be human. Being imperfect is what makes us who we are. Imagine how boring life would be if everyone was exactly the same. Also, there are better things to do with this time that we spend obsessing over our looks. We could learn a new sport, meet new friends, or volunteer. Looks don’t matter. People judge you on your personality more than your looks. Even if you were the world’s prettiest girl, it wouldn’t matter if you were a total jerk. Above all this, the truth is that beauty has no definition. It is what you make it. If you are a good person on the inside, it’ll show on the outside. Honestly, everyone is beautiful because diversity is beauty. It’s time for people to look past their shallow issues and focus on the world’s real problems, like crime, poverty, and hunger.
