Divergent
Divergent, by Veronica Roth, is a thrilling science fiction and romantic novel that will keep readers on the edge of their seat. This novel takes the reader through the life of a sixteen-year-old girl named Beatrice Prior, who has to make the most important decision of her entire life. In a post – American society, she must choose a faction that she will remain with for the rest of her life. The reader is taken on an adventure filled with love, suspense, and emotion. Through numerous obstacles that stand in her way, Beatrice must fight to stay alive and if there is one secret that should never leak out, it’s that she is Divergent.
In this novel, Veronica Roth remains clear, so the reader understands, fully, what is going on. It’s extremely important for an author to remain clear throughout the entire book if he/she wishes for the audience to complete the book. Coinciding with clarity, Roth is consistent with the plot of the story as well as with the beliefs of the characters within the novel. This allows the common, teenaged reader to remain interested in the book. If there are places in the book in which parts don’t fit together, the reader will become disinterested. Not only is Veronica clear throughout the novel, but she also uses colorful and creative language that helps create vivid images in the reader’s mind. When reading this novel, the reader is able to create a whole new world within his or her own mind. The language that is used within Divergent is language that is easily understood by a teenager; thus, creating limitless possibilities of a fantastical setting. Within this novel, Beatrice must learn to be honest and true to her. She must do what is best during a difficult time period. Divergent reminds the common person that important decisions should be made based on truth. It touches on these significant and important issues throughout the novel. Not only does this novel touch base on these issues in everyday reality, but also the views expressed in this novel coincide with my personal beliefs about making sound, moral decisions. Within Divergent, Beatrice is presented with many difficult decisions, and often, she chooses the decision that would be common of the average teenager. In a way, the decisions that she makes do, in fact, reflect somewhat of the reality that a teenager lives in today. The common teenager is faced with inadvertence and must make sound decisions when dealing with inadvertence. However, Divergent does not reflect reality in some parts. The book takes place in a fantastical world filled with events that do not regularly occur in the world today, such as the use of serums to control an entire population. There are many points within Divergent in which the reader may appear to escape from reality, but only to find themselves brought back to an event that deals with realistic issues. Overall, Divergent is a captivating novel that will keep the reader on the edge of their seat with vivid imagery and with real and unreal experiences that will keep the reader thirsting for more in life.
