Writing is hard. Actually translating your convoluted thoughts into words, then trying to put those words to paper in such a way that will not only satisfy yourself but those reading your work. Then the paranoia sets in … people are actually going to read my words, my thoughts, then judge me based on them. Good judgments, bad judgments, they are all the same, they impact a writer whether they admit it or not. It can go straight to their head or humble them like nothing else.
Speaking is even harder. In the moment, trying to say what you feel and what you think, trying to find the right words that will precisely describe what you hear in your head, what you feel in your heart. Cue the stuttering. Now the person you are talking to will never understand what you’re trying to say. If they could just read your mind they would know all about the delicious thoughts stored up in that brain of yours, but rather you say “never-mind” and move on, scared of what they might think of you, scared of what you might say.
We let words hold so much power over us, when in the end they are just simply thoughts, thoughts someone gave voice to. Words have the power to destroy us and have the power to heal us. Language is a powerful tool if wielded correctly and in the right hands can accomplish anything. It is not to be feared or oppressed. Learn to expand your horizons.
Words have the power to do anything, they allow us to think, to feel, to speak, to write, and to read. Memorizing SAT vocabulary does not make you smart, you do not need to know a “plethora” of words to be a genius, all you need is the right ones. The right words correctly strung together have the power to do anything; as long as you are not afraid to use them.
Thoughts are words and without words you cannot think. Use your words wisely.
