My Quiet Place

When you come into Auburn NY, you will notice that there can be some commotion during the day as well as in the evening. Some parts here are nicer than others and some louder. Most people that I have come in contact with in Auburn have been kind to me. If you go past the high school and down Sand Beach Rd you will see a street named Southgate Dr. Southgate Dr is across the street from Forest Hill Dr. My street is a very quiet road with little traffic.

The street that holds this neighborhood is a dead end road. That fact plays a big part as to why my neighborhood is so mute. The only people who use it are the people who live here and the occasional visitors. When a car goes down the street it’s breaking a silence unlike if it drove down a road with constant traffic. The passengers that journey down this street in a car will see houses on both sides. All of these houses are well kept with lawns mowed. Some with basketball hoops that are left lonely with no one to play on. This is because this street has seen kids grow up and leave. So now there are no kids but me and my brother who are almost done with school and are also ready to go out into the world on our own. Then our basketball hoop will be left lonely like all the others. The home owners here are older people, that also contributes to the silence that sits here. Most houses here have pools that are barely used just like the basketball hoops. Between the pools and basketball hoops, it’s obvious that this street was once very lively. I can only wish that I had lived here during that time because for a young boy it was a little bit harder to get to a friends house without leaving the neighborhood altogether. About a third of the way down the street it curves to the right slightly. Then in between from there and the end of the street there is another short road that only holds four houses. This road is called McCormick Way. This road is just like mine. Its so short that it is basically considered the same road as mine to all the people who live here. Past that is the rest of the street and this is where things end. There are woods at the end of the road and the last two houses seem to always have the worst kept lawns as if the woods are coming to life and trying to consume the houses on the end of the road. During the trip down this street, you will most likely not have seen any cars or anyone outside except for maybe one person cutting their grass, or an older couple on a walk if you come in the evening, but never both at the same time.

Life on this street is pretty great if you ask me now. If you ask me as a kid with no license, and low responsibility who just wants to have fun with friends then I would have probably told you I wished I lived somewhere else. Overall it’s a great place to raise kids. It’s quiet, peaceful, and relaxing. When it turns to night it doesn’t calm down because it’s always next to silent here on Southgate Dr.
