During this rapidly evolving technological era, many concerns have arisen for debate about the rise of Artificial Intelligence, otherwise known as AI. These machine learning tools were designed with the purpose of being as close to the human brain's intellect as possible. As technology efficiency increases by the hour, so does the hunger for money and power in the corporate world. People are anxiously balancing on the thread of hope that they will stay employed as unemployment rates have skyrocketed to unprecedented levels. Raising more wary queries about that AI would take away the little hope of job security and disregard the hard-earned skillsets and lengths they had gone through to get to where they currently are today. If businesses started replacing humans with AI, would this mean the end for them? Major technology companies should integrate AI with the purpose of boosting productivity in a business as a core asset; however, they should find a proper balance in combining both AI and human talent in order to minimize the risk of undervaluing human employees’ skill sets. Major technology companies should integrate AI to boost productivity and learn to achieve a balance in which both AI efficiency and human talent are leveraged as core business assets. This can help ensure that technological progress benefits not only the economic world but also helps support the people in the workforce.
One of the biggest reasons many corporations are pushing the use of AI among their employees is that they want to increase their productivity and influence their business growth and efficiency as much as possible. In the corporate world, they have an unspoken rule that efficiency equals survival in the market. As the technological era expands so rapidly, they must try to match this speed by integrating the latest tools into their system as quickly as possible. AI was first formally established at the Dartmouth Conference in 1956 as merely an idea, a delusion. Simply something found in a kids' science fiction book. Only during the 21st century did the idea of such a revolutionary tool existing become a hot topic in the public. Not only does AI give businesses the power to do logic-driven tasks much faster than a human could possibly do, but it is also known for having minimal errors that a human might be prone to make. Füller had even emphasized “the role of AI-driven experimentation in fostering innovation by enabling organizations to test and iterate ideas more efficiently”(Ali et al., section 4). Proving that AI integration is useful in numerous tasks when used ethically. This emphasizes the fact that the world needs AI as a tool; otherwise, everyone will drown in their own fears and never advance further. With AI, businessmen can not only save the time their employees used to accomplish those tedious tasks, but also use the time they saved to put their useful talents and skills to use somewhere that is appreciated and needed. Now employees can build on other skills such as innovation, teamwork, creative thinking, and unique approaches. Instead of worrying about AI taking away their jobs, they should think about how they can use it as a tool to further demonstrate their talents and skills. This tool is not simply a random idea from the past; rather, it is now a necessity for the future of mankind.
The reason why many people are against using AI is because of how it is notoriously known for “stealing” jobs from artists, musicians, and more…but is it really? These same people greatly underestimate the capacity of the human brain's adaptability and creativity. Just like technology, the human brain has also greatly advanced as time has gone by. Adding to the fact that the human brain is still much smarter than AI to this day, it is what created AI in the first place. For now, AI can only process information already given to it or that it feeds itself from the internet; however, people can empathize, lead, feel, innovate, truly be creative, etc. If used ethically and responsibly, AI could be an extremely useful tool to do almost any task a person could dream of: from researching about the randomest topics to helping people create mnemonics to remember physics questions. When considered a useful partner that helps employees perform their best, they have exclaimed that working alongside AI is “becoming increasingly adaptable, capable of adjusting their behavior to maximize output or minimize costs”(Paciello 64). Proving that it is not undermining their abilities, but rather enhancing them. Not to mention the money costs that were saved and could be used for something much more useful or valuable. Major corporations would definitely take this opportunity to benefit by putting that money back in either satisfying employees with a bigger pay or boosting their company. Again emphasizing that a balance between human intellect and the precision of machine learning could help create an environment where the workplace could thrive to greater lengths than one could imagine. Looking back into the Industrial Revolution, many people also worried that they would lose their jobs as machines advanced. Although this was true for many, they learned to adapt to this, and the same people who were unemployed due to machines found new jobs that either helped take care of and supervise the machines or had a new job related to these new inventions in some way. This same logic could be applied to the present misunderstanding that AI will take over the world. Learning to co-exist with this new tool would empower mankind to achieve much more than previously thought, if only they stepped out of their comfort zones for just a minute.
Many critics may argue that AI has too many negative byproducts that weigh heavily against the benefits of AI. One of the biggest news trends besides politics today is how AI will supposedly “take over the world”. A trending incident that recently occurred is the AWS incident. It was rumored that an intern at Amazon decided that a few lines of code were unnecessarily lengthy, so they decided that they should “fix” it by copying and pasting lines of code they had asked an AI to help create. This system malfunction was a worldwide reminder that being too dependent on AI could be extremely detrimental. This malfunction caused many problems for many important sites and websites that people heavily relied on, such as school sites(e.g., Canvas), Amazon's site itself, Pinterest, etc. Further proving that being so heavily dependent on such a new form of technology was not the smartest choice, and one wrong step could lead to many huge losses. Also emphasize the “growing anxiety about using AI to stay ahead” in many industries, which could lead to a lot of miscalculated steps”(Ali et al., section 1). Another reason people are against the use of AI is the fear that they might lose their jobs and that unemployment might skyrocket; however, a deeper understanding of what AI really is would further prove that such a statement could not be merely said without substantial evidence. When people think of AI, they usually imagine an extremely dangerous robot from a science fiction novel. Psychologically, being ingrained in human brains from the beginning, the idea of “new” is too different to accept. If a person were to step back and wonder how they could benefit from this “foreign object”, they would realize that AI is an effective tool that could boost human productivity to the max. At first sight of a negative incident, people try to find faults in using AI; however, the “full [impressive] effects [of AI] won’t be realized until waves of complementary innovations are developed and implemented”(Brynjolfsson 1). Basically, voicing that these critics will keep criticizing till there are enough positive implementations of AI use in society that support their beliefs and ideas. A rather self-centered way of thinking when they only focus on one aspect of a topic. Although concerns of AI causing unemployment and fears of humans being too heavily dependent on AI are valid in a sense, they are overlooking the potential of a harmonious balance that could benefit mankind overall.
In this rapidly evolving era, the rise of AI has sparked both fear and a chance for opportunity. If people stay in their comfort zones, then they will never realize the potential that was awaiting them if they had just opened that door. AI is not taking over the world; rather, it is something new that could be the gateway to efficiently boost human productivity, enhance human potential, and be the powerful tool that people or corporations need to achieve the goals they desire. It is already proven that when major technology companies properly balance Artificial Intelligence and their employees' minds and talents, it plays a substantial role in their success when compared to other companies that do not have proper Artificial Intelligence systems for their employees to use. When ethically used, it reduces their employees' stress and workload, improves their efficiency and how much they get done, and benefits the economy and its people overall. As AI technology continues to expand further, “one of its most significant advancements lies in its ability to enhance human-machine collaboration”(Ghozail 3). Stating that humans were meant to coexist with AI since the moment it was created. The real challenge is not if AI will replace humans in the future, but if they are ready to use this powerful tool to unlock their own potential to the maximum extent possible.
