It's astonishing that iPhones, something we use in our daily lives, were only first introduced in the 21st century. Technology has advanced at an unbelievable pace, shaping our world into what it has become today. Yet, as fast as many of these technological changes have taken place, none will be as impactful as what’s to come -- artificial intelligence.

AI, an abbreviation for artificial intelligence, refers to the intelligence of machines and computer systems. Undoubtedly, AI has made significant advancements in many fields, such as mathematics, medicine, and science - just to name a few. It also helps us daily with utilities such as search engines, imagery, speech recognition, and self-driving automobiles. However, with constant breakthroughs being made, it is important to acknowledge the dangers that emerge with this powerful weapon.

Over the last few years, there have been growing concerns about cybersecurity, with countless network breaches being made with AI. technologies. There have been far more privacy matters, with organizations and companies at risk of being hacked. Not only is this bad for the companies themselves, but users are also at risk of having their data robbed. This puts them in danger of identity theft, leading to a list of complications that include their finances, credit status, and criminal record. In addition, AI can launch automated attacks, which are difficult for traditional security systems to trace, keeping hackers hidden.

Moreover, there has been an increase in the number of people displaced from their jobs, as AI has proven far more efficient than human workers. In May of 2023 alone, four thousand people lost their jobs to AI in the United States, which is expected to rise in the coming years. This means that changes are being made with the type of jobs in demand, often including engineering, AI specialists, and data scientists. Yet, these occupations require skill and time, which may be unavailable to some individuals.

Not only is it vital that these issues are addressed to create a more secure digital space that can protect company assets but training programs should also be provided to help laid-off employees adapt to the evolving workforce. AI continues to grow without a sign of slowing down, so we must recognize the hazards and become educated on how it constantly shapes our society to always be one step ahead.

Dear misswonderlust,
I want to take a moment to appreciate the effort you’ve put into this article. Your research skills are truly remarkable. I like how you didn’t just mention the negative effects of artificial intelligence but you made sure to cover the positive effects as well, it’s true AI is growing rapidly and in many fields. With the rising use of artificial intelligence, many companies have been using it for various purposes, at the cost of their customers' privacy. As you also mentioned that AI has replaced many jobs and the new ones that were created in the process require a lot of time to adapt to and may not be available for most. You’ve clearly highlighted the effect of artificial intelligence on employment rates, and what I agree with the most is your suggestion on getting unemployed individuals to train them to adapt to the new working conditions.

Furthermore, your article definitely shows how artificial intelligence has grown over the last few years and the many changes it’s made. You’ve opened my eyes on the importance of learning how to adapt to the new change while keeping ourselves informed about the hazards that may come with it.

Sincerely,
Zahraa Ahmed
