I used to live in Oklahoma, where my extended family currently lives. Before we moved, we played ambitious games on the holidays, that got very competitive, give gifts on birthdays and Christmas, and we were superior at cooking food.

My favorite aunt was Heather. She is around my age and we got along great despite our different personalities. She was more introverted than I, making me somewhat alike her. When I moved away, my heart felt like a solider, going away to war because I didn’t have a way to connect to her.
“I don’t want you to go.” as she hugged me.
“I’ll come and visit you; I promise.” as I started to sob, leaning into her.

Even though transitioning was a dreadful time for me, visiting my family got me through it and they taught me everything I know. I learned how to ride a bike, play games, and to cook. If I take those lessons with me, I know my family will always be close to my solider heart.
