Sunshine
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.”

Sister, please listen. I know you are feeling left behind. But please, just look at me when I say to you: You are beautiful just the way you are. You are all the sunshine anyone could ever need.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are grey.
But I can see that you don’t believe me
When I try to take your sunshine away.

Oh little sister, please stop and listen.
I only say this because I care.
The damage that you are causing yourself
Would break my heart, can’t you tell?

You may have heard me say that I love you
But I love you because you’re you.
It doesn’t matter how dark your skin is
It only matters how you embrace your hue.

To all the others that try to make you
And try to keep you out in the sun,
Please don’t hurt my little sister.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

I know it’s distant, but it is coming.
The future is so bright for you.
So sit in the shade, not tanning your skin
And you’ll save not one life but two.

Oh little sister, if you don’t listen
I fear that I may lose you.
And if that happens, you have just hurt me
Beyond any amount you can perceive.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are grey.
Now when you’re outside, in the sunshine,
Please remember the words I have just said.
