Carved from clay with a copper finish, this sculpture is intended to depict the physical effect of emotion both above and beneath the skin. My father always said, don't be sad, it will harm your health. Feelings such as sadness and anger result in a rush of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the bloodstream; which, if present in very large amounts or for an extended period of time, affects neurotransmission and causes immune suppression, high blood pressure, asthma, even depression. Intangible emotions manifest themselves in our bodies in more ways than the simple production of tears or sweat. I wanted to create a piece showcasing the anatomical aspects of emotional stress- with a focus on facial muscle position. Not every muscle is accurately depicted- the masseter is smaller than in reality and the zygomaticus major is absent entirely. I tried to create something as anatomically accurate yet aesthetically pleasing as possible in the time allotted. My biggest hope is that my father, the inspiration behind my medical aspirations, is pleased with my work.
