Lines drawn with a low-quality regular pen, and then coloured with a lovely, fine-point pen. It can be interpreted however you like; the original intention was to demonstrate how "shhhh" works. The noise, represented as sharp shapes produced from the white square, is completely dampened upon meeting the boundary.
Of course, it's also interesting to simply squint your eyes and let it become almost three-dimensional.
