We walked across the dessert to get to a better land,
The sun was beating on our backs,
As we enter into a place where we are banned
Our valuables are the only things in our packs.

In addition to that, we have nothing
To cover us through the cold night
No shoes, no extra clothing
Just the warmth of the searchlight

We run, jump, and hide to get across
We are all sleep-deprived and upset
And as we get deeper into the desert, we suffer yet another loss
As their body is left behind to forget

All we have to do now is to swim upstream
So we can start living the American dream

I was inspired to write this piece because of the recent immigration reforms and because I don't think people understand the hardships immigrants endure in their search for a better life for their family.
