“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions”
Rainer Maria Rilke quote

At least these barefoot, contused emotions
Mollify my megalomania
That seeps from mine now lauded self notions.
By what real means do these phenomena
Incessantly evoke flashbacks of you?
It is my skin aching to be caressed-
The pain is something I cannot eschew.
I on one leg stand and puff out my chest
For I have become, in your long absence,
The jealous witness of this game for two-
And I do bite my thumb onto distance,
Whose restricting fangs upon my heart chew.
Your name is on my lips forever burned,
As if 'twas I who ate the fruit, and learned.

The author's comments:
I was inspired to write this piece by a personal period of longing and painful reminiscing upon a short romance. Pigeons are known to puff out their chests, stand on one leg, etc. when they are in the presence of human couples. The final Adam and Eve reference is intended to evoke the concept of being forever haunted by a past action.
