We stumbled hesitantly, clumsily, through uncharted territory;
hands became eyes as they felt the warm walls of this hidden dark room.
Words fell on an ocean of cold empty air I was hesitant to dip my toes in.
As waves washed over my bare ankles, I heard them pulsing,
in time, with the raw rhythm of your soul.
You pressed your ear against my sandy breast and I was afraid.
This intimacy, thoughts breathing so closely together, was the ghost beneath my bed
that I couldn’t bring myself to tackle.
Blankets protected me from everything that lurked beneath and
I wanted to pull them past my head and bury myself in their familiar heat,
but love, I’ve learned, is building a fort instead.
