We choose the love we think we deserve ~The Perks

And I remember she wouldn’t wake up.
Her lips were mushed together in a
Horrible shade of red
They buried my mother in a white dress
And red lips.
And she couldn’t see.
Where are your glasses, Mommy?
And still at sixteen I bring them to my face
And peer through the distorted murky lenses
To see what she saw
Maybe one day …
And I remember it hitting me
Like it does every day
When I hear them all talk and complain about their
“Horrible” mothers
What’s it like to have a mother
I’d give anything to know,
Or at least for them to know how lucky they are.
They know.
And I remember she wouldn’t sit up
And I dreamed of a stuffing machine because
Someone whispered by my ear she was
Cut in half and stuffed
And it made no sense
And still at sixteen I wonder
What happened to my mother?
And I remember her faintly
She doesn’t even smile in my dreams anymore
And I wonder if she’ll ever be proud of me
If she’d ever approve of me
And who I’ve become
The things I’ve seen
The things I’ve done
And I remember her singing
Though I can’t hear her voice
The only happy Christmas I hold on to
Every year
Maybe one day it’ll come back
I used to think
Maybe one day she’d come back
And still at sixteen I hope
Maybe one day she’ll come back …
And I remember she wouldn’t wake up
Not even to say good-bye.

I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I'm one of those people.
~John Lennon

This poem was amazing. I totally understand where you're coming from, i feel the same way. I lost my dad a while ago, and it irritates me when people say they have bad parents. I understand what it's like to want to remember your mom, and i think you portrayed and spoke you feelings well in this poem, very subtle yet it flows very nicely. Great job

This is really good, it shows a lot of emotion. And even though I cant relate all that much, it must have been really hard to put this out there for people to see. Im sorry to for your mother:(

"I realize that life is risks. It's acknowledging the past but looking forward. It's taking chances that we will make mistakes but believeing we all deserve to be forgiven."
-The Dead Tossed Waves.

this almost made me cry. it's so sad and so true. i can relate in a way, not with the death of my mother, but other losses and things that have happened in my life. growing up i had to listen to the same things. people complaining about their parents..and how unfair their life was. all i wanted to tell them was to be greatful they even had parents. i never got to say goodbye either..for too many people i loved. im sorry for your loss, and this poem? it was beautiful.

Love your best friends while you have them, because someday, you might wake up and they won\'t be there anymore.

This poem really speaks to me. I lost someone close to me when I was little too, and I didn't understand what was going on. Keep up the great poetry!

It is cruel, you know, that music should be so beautiful. It has the beauty of loneliness of pain: of strength and freedom. The beauty of disappointment and never-satisfied love. The cruel beauty of nature and everlasting beauty of monotony. <3

Wow. You live in Pennsylvania, I do too. It's weird to see people from Pa because it's so small. I live like 30 minutes away from you. Your poem is wonderful. I feel the same way because 2 students have died at our district this year and 1 mother. it's really sad. I love the comparisons I can make to your poem. it's great :)
