We choose the love we think we deserve ~The Perks

And I remember she wouldn’t wake up.
Her lips were mushed together in a
Horrible shade of red
They buried my mother in a white dress
And red lips.
And she couldn’t see.
Where are your glasses, Mommy?
And still at sixteen I bring them to my face
And peer through the distorted murky lenses
To see what she saw
Maybe one day …
And I remember it hitting me
Like it does every day
When I hear them all talk and complain about their
“Horrible” mothers
What’s it like to have a mother
I’d give anything to know,
Or at least for them to know how lucky they are.
They know.
And I remember she wouldn’t sit up
And I dreamed of a stuffing machine because
Someone whispered by my ear she was
Cut in half and stuffed
And it made no sense
And still at sixteen I wonder
What happened to my mother?
And I remember her faintly
She doesn’t even smile in my dreams anymore
And I wonder if she’ll ever be proud of me
If she’d ever approve of me
And who I’ve become
The things I’ve seen
The things I’ve done
And I remember her singing
Though I can’t hear her voice
The only happy Christmas I hold on to
Every year
Maybe one day it’ll come back
I used to think
Maybe one day she’d come back
And still at sixteen I hope
Maybe one day she’ll come back …
And I remember she wouldn’t wake up
Not even to say good-bye.

This is very beautifully written. My mom has to go into surgery and I am so scared I am going to loose her. It really makes me remeber how special she is.

We are all the same because we all think that we are different,

Excatly how I felt. This piece is beautiful, I got the chills halfway through, I understand the depth of this && can relate. Using experiences to write , always ends great, even if it is just soft && subtle. The topic, the ending is what lurred me in. Keep Writing babygirl :)

This is a beautiful poem. The use of vivid language and clear emotion is stunning. I don't like many of the poems I read, but this one I do.

p.s. If anyone would like to check out my new poem, that would be very appreciated.

“There is nothing more dreadful than the habit of doubt. Doubt separates people. It is a poison that disintegrates friendships and breaks up pleasant relations. It is a thorn that irritates and hurts; it is a sword that kills.” -Buddha

This honestly brought tears to my eyes. The language was absolutely beautiful and got across the emotion perfectly. I applaud your writing ability. It really inspired me to care more about things I take for granted.

If true, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

The emotions felt in this poem are breath-taking. If this is true, I apologize for your loss. Your truly interprets the feelings one may feel, and the hints here and there are all amazing, you are extremely talented.

I've been scouting Teen Ink poetry all day, looking for inspiration, as a fellow poet, and when I read a poem like this one and I THINK I can see everything so clearly in my mind, I realize that there's still bits and pieces that are left out for the imagination to ponder and I love it. It's why I love poetry, and it's why I love this poem.

If you love it let it go. If it comes back to you its yours to keep.

This is a beautiful piece, and I think that the way you express your feeling of loss is astounding.

This is a really pretty poem. It's very well-written, but sad. Is this a true story?

Oh, this is so sad! So beautiful, but so sad. *tear tear* Amazing job. I could never imagine what it's like to not have a mother. My mother and I are so super mega close to each other, we're like sisters. My world would shatter on top of me if I lost her.

“The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” --Mark Twain

The emotion is deep, and is portrayed beautifully. I love the part: "And I remember her singing Though I can’t hear her voice". It is a contrast, but makes sense. I love to use a contrast because it pulls the audience in. Beautiful!!
