You Do Not Represent Me

All I see is students, hundreds and hundreds, maybe even thousands
Standing on the streets of my city
Holding up signs  “Free Hong Kong!”
And chanting, “ we want democracy”

You do not represent me.
I lay at wake at night wondering how if I will keep my business
My trade depends on the special connection between Hong Kong and China.
Export and excise taxes are my concern, one country two systems my motto
We should remain one.

You do not represent me.
I may be old and weak, but I have my own opinions.
China is the mother country of Hong Kong. It is our heritage. It is our true home.
Without it, we are nobody.
You students just don’t understand.

You do not represent me.
I cannot go to work anymore, you blocked off my little shop.
Oh, how much it hurts me to see my children looking hungry.
My family needs the money,
We aren’t lucky like you intellectuals who can afford to waste time.

You do not represent me.
I cannot drive my customers to their destinations,
Without being stuck for hours in re-routed traffic.
Who cares about democracy anyways? A mere philosophical construct!
Does it help you make a living?

You do not represent me.
Yes, as an intellectual I think democracy would be an ideal government,
But think realistically! Do you really think blocking off main roads,
Is the right way to do this?
Especially when you know the Chinese government won’t back down?

You do not represent us.
We don’t appreciate what you are doing.
Go back to school and learn to appreciate the resources you have available.
You aren’t the only voices in Hong Kong, though you are the loudest
We exist too.
