Freight Train

All Aboard!

3:00 AM

I laid in the top bunk

Staring at the ceiling

I heard it.

The rusty wheels

Did everybody hear it?

The sharp screech

Am I the only one?

In the distance

Chug-Chug-chug

Something that was so distant

Seemed so close

The wheels go around

Chug-Chug

Faster

Screaming at her

Pointing the light at her

Does he dare hit her?

Faster

Chug-Chug-Chug

Faster

Hissing black smoke into the air

Does anyone smell it?

Does anyone feel the steam?

Am I the only one who thinks this is wrong?

*20 minutes until we reach our final destination

I just wanted to yell

LEAVE HER ALONE

But I can’t.

It won’t hear me

It won’t hear me

It won’t hear her

It won’t hear her

5:00 AM

The train is gone.

The smell is disappearing

The screeching stopped.

The smoke has evaporated into the air

The sun is peaking over the trees

She is smiling trying to make the day bright.

Trying.

Everybody knows it will be back

Tomorrow at 3:00AM.

I wrote this poem about my parents divorce and how I would hear them yelling. I hope people who know what it feels like to go through a divorce can connect to the poem.
