Wandering through the crowd, you're surrounded by a sea of faces

No one looks, no one seems to care

Emphasizing the emptiness, like the ocean at night

You stay unnoticed

Someone looks over at you and smiles, stirring emotions within

A smile that should warm you’re heart, but freezing blue ice fills the void

You share the air with strangers, like seeing breaths when it's cold outside

You stay hidden

Lost and lonely in a crowded room, you stand alone

Among the crowd, a name is called, looking over, but it isn't for you

The words crash like ocean waves during a storm

You stay alone

Laughter fills the air, but you're just left standing there

Glancing amongst the crowd, unfamiliar faces stare back at you

They're lurking in the water, waiting to bite

You stay invisible

The crowd roars when the football team scores

They jump to give high-fives and cheer

But you stand alone, waiting for your high-five

You stay silent

You stand alone in the crowded room, drowning in the sea

You search for help, for someone to see you, hear you, and notice you

You fight to stay included while being disregarded

You stay disconnected

The author's comments:

I wrote this because I used to feel alone even when I would be with friends and family. I never felt like I was there, and I was always on the outside looking in. Finally, someone asked if I was doing okay, and I opened up, explaining the lonely feeling. This conversation taught me how to feel included again. I have made it my mission to help others feel the same way to show them that they are important and shouldn't feel left out.
