A Poem Inspired by Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen

Five Minute Check

The tattered orange sofa
The stained yellow chairs
The chemicals we often need
The privacy we don’t have
The residents we cannot stand
The plastic knives that make food bland
Five minute check
We are interrupted
We are losing time here
They will remind us
They will be the mockers
The telephone booths, our only connection
The burnt face that should be healing
Five minute check
Where has our time gone?
There are bars on the window
Could it slip through there?
Five minute check
I want to escape, but I cannot
We are locked in this place for an interim
We are locked inside ourselves forever
Five minute check

I've read that book too, and love how you just incorporated so many aspects of the book into this poem.
