Driving home we held hands over the emergency brake
So Mom would be mad that I was out so late
But the drive is long enough that
we have the time we missed last night
And here we are driving me home before first light
Gray creeps over the horizon out the windshield
And I feel a sense of ending settle into me
Nothing lasts forever but I’d hoped it’d last longer that this
And there you were waiting when I came from the door.
I don’t know what I’ve done and I know I don’t deserve you.
But you shook your head and said it didn’t matter
So driving home we hold hands over the emergency brake
As my guilt nauseates me to the point where I ask you to pull over and let me cry
But you held me tight as I said I was sorry
And forgave me without saying a thing
But now we’re back at my house just as the sun is rising
And I know the trouble I’m in
But that doesn’t stop me from
(as we walk across the lawn)
stealing our last goodnight kiss.
