The Mask

They think they know who I am,
and exactly what I'll be.
They see the side I only expose,
instead of seeing the "real me".

But everything I hide away,
is hidden behind a mask.
Every feeling, thought, and smile
has been buried with my past.

So I put on my fake face,
and steady my broken voice.
I transform myself into a monster
and I do it without a choice.

My smile has no feeling
and my eyes are only hollow.
My sunshine has been chased away,
and the darkness is all I follow.

But one of these days I'll break free,
and they won't now me anymore!
They'll finally see the honest smile
that they haven't seen before.

And then I will leave them all behind
as I find myself that day.
I will be myself again,
when the mask finally goes away.

This is an extremely relatable poem, and it carries a good rythm and smooth transition between stanzas.  Good job!

This is awesome and i can really relate. Everyone can see the mental side of my personality, but I hide away my emotional side. And, on the rare occasions my pain slips out, no one notices that my mask has slid off.

This is really cool, I agree that you could fill a book with your poems! That would be awesome. I love masks too, so that helps and as always great message!

I love this poem. So much about identity and how often people change themselves for others and not so much for themselves.
Keep it up :)

What an amazing piece! Good rhythm. It's almost song-like. <3
A nice shift in the poem with a clever conclusion.
