"The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ghost town, the place is a ghost town.
Shutters up and windows drawn
I am the only soul walking around.

A rusty slide squeaks hello,
the swing lies empty as I walk by.
No children to be heard or seen.

I listen hard for voices
But the wind wails in my ear,
mimicking the cries of long ago

Your story is buried in a grave,
the skeleton of a community
with an unmarked headstone.

Ghost town, you have disappeared
just like your people.
No one remembers,
or knows what happened here.

This poem was inspired by a town I once visited. I hope this will raise awareness about towns like this, with forgotten stories and forgotten people.
