You don’t have to write me poetry
if that’s not your thing
(though I would at least like you to try).
You can get me my poems from a myriad of different people.
If you gave me Dickinson, or Plath, or Cummings (especially Cummings),
I would be putty in your hands (probably).
Even if you didn’t write a single letter of the work,
I would believe that you meant every sentiment expressed therein to be
about me.
Sometimes, it’s those removed a few degrees who best express what it is you should be feeling.
